Barcelona taxis
« on: September 29, 2023, 11:26:02 pm »
Terrible from experience so far.

One quoted me €75 for a fare that turned out to be €18 fcuk sake. The €18 euro guy wanted €40 euro, I actually paid it in the end because we agreed the price beforehand and there wasn't much other options, i told him he was taking the piss though. they are a disgrace to taxi drivers though, no wonder we have a bad name in general. That guy might think he got one over on me but he didn't really when you think about it, he's just a low life who robs people and I couldn't care less about €22.

In fairness to irish taxis, I don't think we are as bad as that.

I never overcharged anyone by 1 cent. Never will either.

I took a picture of the €75 guys number plate. Might report him later.

The €75 euro guy said he works for free now.

It had nothing to do with the language barrier, they knew enough English to understand what I was saying. It was Just a case of meeting greedy Thieves. Have never come across it before in other countries including Spain but I haven't been there in about 10 years. I haven't seen 1 Spanish driver so far, they all seem to be from India.

The €75 guy said oh very far trip, it was a 15 minute trip.

Ah well I believe in karma and what goes around comes around.

Metro is great in Barcelona. The T-famiiar ticket gets 8 journeys for a tenner IIRC and can be used by more than one passenger in a party. Only restriction is that it's not accepted on journeys to/from the airport Metro station but it is accepted on the mainline airport service. Other than that use Uber or Bolt or whatever one the locals use and you'll not be ripped off.

If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Once you speak the King's English they know you're a tourist. It happens all over the world and our own lads at DAP are masters at it. I remember one old driver (who well knew) asking me what the fare would be to Killiney as part of his negotiation with the 4 passengers. Back then it was about a pony which I suggested... he very quickly aadded "each" to what I said. On the plus side my job was a 4 ball to Templeogue (part of the same plane load of students) with 4 drops. At the first drop I had a little over a score on the clock and was handed two crisp €/£ (can't remember which) 20 notes of which I retained one. At each of the next 3 drops I was presented with the same scenario i.e. being handed two brand new crisp 20s so repeated my cead mile failte approach by handing one back and feeling less guilty with each score trousered!

I use the meter myself, just in that instance the passengers were of the impression that the meter showed the fare per passenger. The usual complaint when there is a complaint (generally from dem foreigners) is that the meter should start at zero.

I have never had foreign tourists question the price. In general the tourists I meet while working are lovely people.

I just don't see the point in ripping anyone off. What do you really gain from it? Nothing, we aren't living hand to mouth.

4 smal bottles of water was €2.50 in a corner shop yesterday.

Today the exact same 4 bottles plus a solero ice cream in a different corner shop €7. Interesting, I think ye are right about talking English, next time I will just drop the items on the counter and say nothing, but I look Irish so it probably won't work. Ah well its just a few euro I suppose.

Only ever got that from Irish people.

Has anyone ever seen a taxi meter start at 0 in other countries?

Had to get 2 taxis last night,  first guy from Pakistan, lovely guy. Actually had a chat with me unlike a lot of the taxi drivers here, only charged me €10.

Trip home, I was quoted €39 by 2 drivers but met another sound guy from India who charged me €16 which was the price on the meter.

At least we know they aren't all crooks.

The overcharging when busy seems to be accepted in barcelona, you would imagine the NTA would try stamp that out here if it was common. You should loose your taxi license if you think it's OK to double or treble a fare.

Learned a bit from getting taxis here, first guy I got wouldn't let me sit in the front and then just talked to someone on the phone the whole journey, very rude in my opinion and stupid because you are hardly going to tip someone like that or get them again.

A local told me taxis make €10,000 a month here. I suppose we all would if we could double or treble the fares.

Wait till ya come to Cork !, Taxi doors locked, window down, "Where ya going ?", if it doesent suit exactly they refuse.
If it does happen to suit the next question is "Card or Cash ?", if they say 'Card', the Taxi driver refuses.

That is still preferable to taxis ripping you off in my opinion.

It's kind of funny though that they drive off if they hear about a card payment.
