High mileage hostesses, they were called. Maternal figures were thought to calm passengers on long-haul journeys.

If a hostess was on DUB-JFK they could get either an overnight stay in NYC or even the weekend, staying in a swanky hotel.

New recruits were given Malaga, Benidorm, and the Canaries. Being handed bags of sick by skobies soon stripped the job of its glamour.

When the males were hired as stewards they were known by the Engineers affectionately as "Ball-bearing hostesses"!!

A poisoned chalice. Cheap fares allow for cheap labour. On the flip side, it's never been cheaper to emigrate!
