Cyclists are being urged to light up their bike in the dark this winter or they will face a fine from gardaí.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithí de Róiste launched the Dublin Cycling Campaign’s Light up your Bike initiative.

“As the clocks go back and the days get shorter, remembering to light up our bikes becomes increasingly important to ensure the visibility and safety of cyclists on our roads,” he said.

According to the Road Safety Authority, cyclists must carry a lamp showing a white or yellow light to the front and a lamp showing a red light to the back at night.

A spokesperson said: “The fine for no front lamp or rear lamp lit during lighting-up hours on a pedal cycle is €40.

“These are the minimum lighting requirements laid down by law. However, to be even more visible to motorists at night, you should add strips of reflective material to the bike (white to the front and red to the back); wear a reflective armband; and wear a ‘Sam Browne’ reflective belt or reflective vest.”

The use of bike lights is a legal requirement during lighting up time, which is from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise.

The enforcement of road traffic laws for cyclists is primarily managed by the Garda Roads Policing Unit, with support from all members of An Garda Síochána.

A garda spokesperson said: “The focus remains on compliance with traffic signals and controls, proper lighting, cycling whilst intoxicated and responsible cycling.

“While not a legal requirement, An Garda Síochána encourages full engagement with safety measures such as helmet use, high visibility clothing, and the use of cycle lanes where available.

“Since 2015 gardaí have the power to stop cyclists and fine them for specific fixed charge cycling offences.

"Gardaí can fine cyclists for the following offences, no front or rear light during lighting-up hours, riding a bicycle without reasonable consideration, failing to stop for a school warden sign, failing to stop at traffic lights when the red lamp is lit.

"Failing to stop at a stop line, barrier or half barrier at a railway level crossing, swing bridge or lifting bridge, when the red lamps are flashing and cycling in a pedestrianised street or area.”

Dublin Cycling Campaign will hand out free sets of bike lights to cyclists at designated points around the city in the coming weeks.

Details of times and locations will be shared on their social media channels.

“Cycling is a reliable and cheap way of getting from A to B, and also has the added bonuses of being quiet, emissions-free and a way of building gentle physical activity into your day.

“With the nights drawing in, Dublin Cycling Campaign wants to remind everyone who cycles that it is essential to light up their bike.

"Working lights are a legal requirement during lighting up hours and a key part of staying safe on the road,” Dublin Cycling Campaign member, Siobhán McNamara said.

Walking and Cycling Officer with Dublin City Council Ailish Lally added: “Dublin City Council is keen to promote cycling as a year-round option for people to travel to school, work and for leisure.

“We encourage everyone to light up their bikes to improve their visibility to other road users and increase their safety on the roads during the darker mornings and evenings.”

Garda Control:  All units, All units, there's a fight breaking out outside Coppers on Harcourt St.  All Units to attend, please...

Garda Control:  All units, All units, cancel that.  There's a cyclist with no lights cycling around Stephens Green.  All Units to attend urgently.

Dublin City Council Meeting in a While .Your Worship I wish to bring to the attention of the Council the antisocial Cycling in Dublin City .After we promoted Cycling a while ago especially for leisure .There is a Pandemic of Peddling Pandimonium impacting on Pedestrians .Garda on Pushbikes are stopping Drunk Cyclist who have used their bicycles for leisure like Concert Going and going to the pub this has resulted in an increase of road cycling accidents and I wish to propose to the Council that we  shut Cycling Lanes between 12.30 Am and 5 PM to protect pedestrians from drunken cyclists

One councillor said Cycle lanes are now more dangerous that the Liffey Boardwalk at night .Councillor Lidia Lovebomb of the Green Party suggested putting more plants trees and flowers around the City to calm people .Councillor Billy Hughes Independens suggested that in the past a man carrying a flag would of run ahead of a motorcar ,was this a viable solution to this issue should Dublin City Council provide Road Runners for Cyclists .The Lord mayor replied Fuck off .

Then a defferent Councillor said The Marathon should be moved as interfered with Cycle Lanes  .The debate on Homelessness was delayed to the next council meeting until after the Holiday break as they ran out of time to hear the motion .
"Ahfuck

lol  The marathon is being moved... not because of cyclists but because it interferes with the buses!

Plans to move the Dublin Marathon outside of the city centre next year are “completely hare-brained”, according to a local councillor.

It emerged over the weekend that the former Dublin City Council CEO Owen Keegan asked marathon organisers to move the start and finish lines for next year’s event.

That came after the National Transport Authority (NTA) complained about the "disproportionate adverse impact" the race has on public transport in the city each year.

Race organisers have warned that the city centre location is central to event’s appeal – and any attempt to move it away from the city centre would see it losing prestige internationally.

A cyclist has died following a road collision involving a truck and an e-bike on the Dolphin’s Barn Bridge in Dublin 8 this afternoon.
The incident occurred at around 12.30pm today. The cyclist was taken to St James’s Hospital with serious injuries and was later pronounced dead.

No other injuries were reported.

There were long delays in Dolphin’s Barn in Dublin city centre today and the area was closed for a time as gardaí and other emergency services investigated the incident.

Dublin Fire Brigade were also at the scene of the incident in Dublin 8, which it described as “serious”. Road users were asked to avoid the area if possible.

Local diversions were put in place and the Dolphin’s Barn Bridge was closed while a technical examination was carried out by Forensic Collision Investigators, but Dolphin’s Barn has since fully reopened, the Dublin City Council Traffic Management Centre confirmed.

There were delays of up to 40 minutes reported along the Grand Canal, South Circular Road and Clanbrassil Street.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Dolphin's Barn Bridge area between 12:15pm and 12:45pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crumlin Garda Station on 01 666 6200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Only the Irish I imagine could come up with cycling/riding an E-vehicle while dressed in black and foregoing any attempt at being seen, not being insured, then claiming off the driver who couldn't have seen them at night in the first place.

Although it will go somewhat to reducing the population of idiots and their possible future issue.

Delivery cyclists are a scourge around the city, it's enough having to watch out for pedestrians wandering on the roads like zombies, the cyclists are barely lit up and swerving all over the streets.

If they did have that campaign, then it didn't work !
I did a few hours last night/this morning in the pissing rain and seen 4 or 5 cyclists with no lights front or back, no hi-vis and fully dressed in black.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithí de Róiste has launched the Dublin Cycling Campaign’s ‘Light up your Bike’ initiative.

‘Light up your Bike’ is an annual awareness-raising initiative to remind cyclists of the importance of using lights on their bikes, especially throughout the winter months.

The launch of the initiative coincides with the clocks going back and the days getting shorter. The use of bike lights is a legal requirement during lighting up time, which is from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. Failure to use bike lights during lighting up time can result in a fixed charge notice from An Garda Síochána.

As part of the initiative volunteers from the Dublin Cycling Campaign will hand out free sets of bike lights, donated by the National Transport Authority, to cyclists at designated points around the city in the coming weeks. Details of times and locations will be shared on their social media channels.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste said, “I am delighted to support this important initiative by the Dublin Cycling Campaign. As the clocks go back and the days get shorter, remembering to light up our bikes becomes increasingly important to ensure the visibility and safety of cyclists on our roads.”

Dublin Cycling Campaign member, Siobhán McNamara said, “Cycling is a reliable and cheap way of getting from A to B, and also has the added bonuses of being quiet, emissions-free and a way of building gentle physical activity into your day. With the nights drawing in, Dublin Cycling Campaign wants to remind everyone who cycles that it is essential to light up their bike. Working lights are a legal requirement during lighting up hours and a key part of staying safe on the road.”

Dublin City Council is proud to support this campaign.

Ailish Lally, Walking & Cycling Officer with Dublin City Council said, “Dublin City Council is keen to promote cycling as a year-round option for people to travel to school, work and for leisure. We encourage everyone to light up their bikes to improve their visibility to other road users and increase their safety on the roads during the darker mornings and evenings.”

Looks like there's 2 bikes and maybe 14 people.  Why are they standing in a 2-way bicycle lane when there's a perfectly good footpath beside them?
