Do EV cars meet the legislative definition of a mechanically propelled vehicle, Watty... Sure they're only electric rickshaws on a slightly larger scale!

How much do the taxis charge, T1990? If Free Now can cut taxi fares by up to 68% in a big city like London surely it could do the same if not more in your tiny little parish with appropriate legislative permission?
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

It's on the way

Jim was at the same years ago, never happened, dont worry about it.

people are going out less these days than years ago as well because of rip off pubs and restaurants.

Could cheaper / more plentiful taxis encourage folk to go out a bit more in rural areas?

I dont think so, if a taxi is 20 euro for them on the night, it is the 150 to 200 + they are spending in the pubs and restaurants that is the issue.

How much is a pint in your parish? I've paid upwards of stg£8 in central London, the equivalent of at least two short Free Now rides.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

I'd also ask the Fine Gael Senator Ahearn 'who's your Daddy?' or who is the Taoiseach?  Hint: It's the boss of your political party.

No point in asking me, I'm just a taxi driver.  The NTA, however, says EV's do meet all the requirements and I have the 22 stickers to prove it.

If FN are dropping the price by up to 68%, they're likely trying to put their competitors out of business so they can re-up the price and gouge the passenger.

To be fair to the Senator, it's his job to propose legislative change where he feels it may be warranted. NTA has, for example, no jurisdiction over the regulation of certain EVs... at least when it suits it - or it's paymasters in Free Now - to have no jurisdiction.
The job of the Seanad is to debate proposed bills suggested by the government i.e. a talking shop. It is not the job of a senator to suggest anything. Abolition is the answer.

Uber was corrupt. Noonan sent them and their angel of death John Moran packing.

I'll bet yer man has never been in a Rideshare vehicle. He may be confusing a hack or private hire using an app as Rideshare. There are very few places where rideshare services actually operate.

I've had loads of passengers in my car who think an unmarked Prius on the Uber app is rideshare when in fact they were in a private hire cab in the UK.

Uber is subject to regulation in Ireland, allowed only in some cities

Why and what cities is it not allowed in?
That line was getting to me too, it's uber's decision where they want to operate, there is no legislation in place to stop them from operating anywhere in Eire that they wish.

The problem with rural towns, is the locals don't like the idea of a meter in a taxi, doubt they would like the surcharge price when it gets busy also.
Busy Saturday night, 3 people jump in to a taxi and want to go down the road for a fiver. Meter goes on and it's almost a fiver, and they will start moaning.

In Dublin, the meter would start at €6.80 if 3 people got into a taxi on a Saturday night... Add another €2 if pre-booked.
