Weird One
« on: January 15, 2024, 12:27:32 pm »
Last evening at approximately 17:14 I got a phone call from a man using what appeared to be a mobile telephone number who claimed to be from NTA. Having established that I had albeit quite limited time to continue - I was actually just entering a licensed premises up above in Dublin for some pre-theatre food/drink - he told me someone reported (to An Garda Siochana) losing a wallet in my car on Saturday evening. Anywaysanall, I found said wallet this morning and arrangements have been made to reunite the same with it's owner... but, in all my years of driving a cab I've never been contacted about lost property by anyone outside of whatever cab company I might have been working for. Anyone else ever get calls of this nature?

I didn't think dealing with lost property was within the remit of NTA or that they worked of a Sunday evening?

If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Sounds odd alright.

When I was up in Ballymun doing my suitability a driver left a document in the office then drove off without it and the inspectors claimed GDPR wouldn't allow them to phone him directly to collect his stuff.

Sounds like a copper pretending to be an NTA official.AFAIK the cops have access to our numbers.

I've no doubt you got his name, and retained his number for future use.

Sounds odd alright.  Maybe the wallet owner was pretending to be a NTA flunky and somehow scare you into compliance?

It does seem odd to be ringing from a mobile number.
I have had a few emails from FN asking me to check fer lost property but never a phone call.

i've had messages from the app sayin somebody lost gear and i've actually had people ring me as well. a few months ago a yank rang me and said their daughter reckons she lost her headphones in my car. it was the 525 XXXX what ever number that the app uses. don't know why she did'nt convey it to freenow and then freenow convey it to me.

According to the below, the NTA have nothing to do with lost property.  The mystery deepens!

https://www.transportforireland.ie/support/lost-property/

Quote
An Garda Síochána is responsible for lost property handed in by Small Public Service Vehicles (SPSV) operators. When property is handed in, it is held for a minimum of 31 days up to 366 days at the discretion of An Garda Síochána depending on the nature or value of the item, to allow the owner to reclaim it.

You should contact your local Garda Station who can advise you if it has been handed in to any Garda station.

Perhaps it was a friend of a Garda that lost the wallet.

He actually rang me again this morning and I did get his his name and he told me they work 24/7, he most definitely was from NTA, I've heard his name mentioned (probably on here or Roys) in the past. Anywaysanall, he explained that Ballymun Gardai contacted him as soon as they got the report. Handy to know that such a system exists for urgent lost property such as passports or medication or whatever... although we don't seem to get many folk coming on here looking for lost property as we (or Roys) once did... probably 'cos new members have to be manually approved to keep the Russian and Israeli bots out these days and sometimes my lack of enthusiasm equates to them sitting on the waiting list for days or weeks on end!

That reminds me of the Fooker that came on here years back with very scant information and between us with some masterful detective work found the driver fer him, and the Fooker never came back to say Thanks !
