Electric cars sales stall in January as motorists opt for hybrid models
The latest sales figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (Simi) show that electric cars as a percentage of new cars sold fell compared to the same time last year

Electric cars sales in Ireland have stalled, according to new industry figures.
The proportion of new electric vehicles (EVs) sold in Ireland fell last month compared to non-EVs, with some industry commentators now describing sales as “stuck in the mud” due to poor charging infrastructure and other issues.

According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (Simi), 13.04pc of new car sales in January were electric cars, a fall of 0.4pc on for the same month last year.


While EV sales actually rose by 12.8pc during the month, this trailed an overall car sales rise of 15pc, meaning the proportion of EVs is now falling compared to ‘fossils fuel’ cars. Sales of petrol hybrid cars in January soared by between 31pc and 34pc, representing almost a third of all new cars bought and up on last year’s figures.

Previously, electric cars had been outperforming non-EVs in sales growth.

"January's Irish electric vehicle sales data highlights that the market is effectively stuck in the mud with market share continuing to be pegged at approximately 13pc of overall sales,” said David Savage, vice president of telemetry firm Geotab.


"The figures highlight the damage that reducing EV subsidies has done to the market. Now is the time to reverse course, not only returning subsidies to their previous level, but going above and beyond that by putting supports in place to boost EVs' popularity.”

The Irish government had said that it wanted to have 945,000 electric cars on Irish roads by 2030, a target that most industry analysts now regard as impossible.

“This highlights the ongoing challenge as we move away from the early adapter stage into a more mainstream market,” said Brian Cooke, director general of Simi.

“The industry continues to supply a greater range of EVs with over 70 different EV models available for sale in Ireland. As we move forward, ongoing government support in terms of incentives and charging infrastructure will play a vital role in ensuring the success of the next phase in the transition to electrification."

I've room in my garden for two, or three cars at a push. should I get a charger and rent it out? Beaumont Hospital is a stone's throw away.

There is actually a business/app for exactly that sort of thing but I can't remember the name.  But any time I've seen it discussed, most were negative about it and didn't how it could work.

Then again, I've heard of people renting out their driveways on a weekly/monthly if they live close to the city centre so what do I know?
