How do you charge for this kind of trip?

Say you have to drop someone to a hospital the cost of getting there is 50 euro, you wait 1 hour, do you charge them the same going back? if you live in the town you pick them up. you are going back anyway, I know some drivers wouldn't charge going back, some would charge a little bit and other charge the full amount.

also is it different if the passenger is paying the bill or the State is paying? Tusla, social welfare, the HSE etc

The HSE have deep pockets. They get charged for both journeys and the waiting time. (A few bob is often added to cover the extortionate base fee I hear).

As for wait and return? It's a case-by-case basis. Drive back empty, or wait and get another €50.00.

Charging someone who really can't afford it for waiting time might be a bit scaldy.

We're running a business, not a charity.  Chances are you'd have to pay parking charges while you wait?  You'd probably buy a newspaper, coffee and sandwich.  That *hour* will be 2 or 3 hours in reality and you're losing money just sitting there...

I'd lean towards charging the full amount including the waiting time.  I might give a discount if it were private but the HSE etc should pay full whack.

Had a guy in the taxi recently who was telling me he had to get a taxi from DAP to Donegal a few tears back(in the fishery biz)...cost €500 in hard cash.....when he got there the driver asked him when he had to return,it was Tues and he had to be back in DAP on the Thurs for the return flight...driver says he'll hang on..so he checked into the hotel for the two nights and brought yer man back on Thurs morning for another 500!!

Yeah thats what I was thinking, if it is the State paying, charge them the full amount including waiting, if its rich people charge them the full amount and if it is someone who doesnt have much money, dont go too hard on them.

That sort of job very seldom appears on the night shift and if it did I would have very little inclination to do the return unless it was 30 minutes or less and it would be full whack on both drop and return but no waiting time added.

The 2 heurs job that I just posted about and did get the return just fell lucky fer me as the return happened to be after only 28 minutes, had it been much longer then I would have been gone as it was only an outside chance that I might get it and no deposit had been paid.

Half way to Kinsale she changed her mind and decided to go back to Cork fer her car, I oblidged but charged her the full fare from Cork to half way to Kinsale and back again to the same house.

She had sobered up a lot after whatever trouble with intended cop off guy she had, but Yea she was well over the limit.
While it was not my place, I did attempt to give her a few warnings but she was not fer listening.
