Was taxi involved in cyclist collision Dame St Sat A.M.?
« on: May 18, 2024, 04:25:33 pm »
I wonder if a taxi was involved in the fatal collision with a cyclist on Dame St at ~5.25am this Saturday morning?  Squinting at the RTE photo, it looks like a taxi is the only car remaining at the scene?

Cyclist, 70s, dies in Dublin city centre collision

Quote
A cyclist in his 70s has died following a collision with a car in Dublin city centre this morning.  The man was taken to St James's Hospital following the collision on Dame Street at around 5.25am, where he was later pronounced dead.  The driver of the car is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.  Dame Street was closed for a technical examination of the scene, but has since reopened.

Another motorcyclist killed last Friday... yet we still let them drive on public roads. We have a very high "normal death" rate for motorised cycles.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

We're great in this country at making rules, not so good at enforcing them.  If I understand things correctly, e-scooters on public roads have been illegal until today.  So how many years have the authorities been turning a blind eye to e-scooters?

I think it's similar with motorbikes.  When you're a beginner, you're supposed to restrict the bike's power to a certain power level.  But I believe it's just a different-sized bolt (or something) in the engine.  5 min job to change it back to 'normal' power (as you leave the test centre!)

I had a biker in the cab a few years back that explained all that power stuff to me in detail, alas I remember very little of it but it's a lot more complicated than what you posted Watty.

I'm not a biker but as far as I remember, it's a big bolt/nut that stops the rider pulling the accelerator the full way.  Replace the big bolt with a standard bolt/nut and you're good to go.  When it was explained to me, I remember thinking only the Irish Govt could come up with something so stupid.

Maybe one of the ex-couriers (or someone going through mid-life crisis who bought a bike) could explain better?

There's lots of ways to restrict a bike AFAIK.It can be a throttle restriction or smaller ports in the carbs.Maybe even a different ECU program.

The problem is even a restricted bike is quicker than most cars and they can all get up to a 100 fairly quickly.Unfortunatley the driving test is all low legal speeds...not much use if a car pulls our of a side road if you're doing 80kmph.Even at 30kmph a crash would send you over the handlebars...from there you just have to hope you land safely.

Very artistic and a nice landing so I'd score that as a 9/10 with 1 point docked for the approach.

I hear it's going to be an Olympic sport in the 2032 Olympics?  Should be a crowd pleaser.
