A regular that I pick up (RC knows him), had a runner in the Brig.

He picked him up opposite the Holy Child Church in Whitehall. €55.00 on the clock when they arrived.

An estate near Tesco I was told.

The African chappie, ( the driver was making assumptions based on appearance and accent), had a bag with him which he insisted on putting in the boot.

When he was told the fare he offered to get his bank card from the bag in the boot, and got out.

The driver also got out and opened the boot and grabbed onto the bag without the punter knowing.

At that point, the African lad made a dash for it - not knowing there was a taximan still attached to his bag.

Both fell to the ground and the taximan got off two digs before the lad made good his escape.

I asked the driver what estate was it? He said, "I don't know, they all look the same".

So, if a geezer wants to do a long run, make sure you get a deposit.

If they waffle about their Ma paying, or they're paying by card, get paid there and then.
If the card doesn't work, then drop them and cut your losses.

i got hit for a 50 by a nigerian in that exact location during the lockdown.
turn left at the tesco in to a little cul de sac. he said that's my house there i'm gonna run in and get the lolly and he jogged across a green in to the night. i came out and drove right down castlemill link road in the direction he went and he was strollin not a bother down it. he walked in to the taylor hill estate and rendez vouzed with another toerag. i parked up beside him staring at him and then i pulled up to him and said how are ye doin and he said how are ye doin back at me. cool as a cucumber. pulled in to a driveway to turn the car around and when i looked back they were gone.

The bag in the boot was a good excuse to get out of the car.

I've noticed in over thirty years that a silent passenger, [that get's your spidey senses up], is usually a good indicator they're going to do a runner.

The two non-payers I had over the years to the Brig were a Latvian guy from Beaumont hospital [turned out to be an Alco, RC might remember him], He swore he'd have the fare the following day, I had the guys' address and RC called in the following day to no avail.

The other one was called Megan Lawlor living in #9, Baron's Hall House. The job came in from Blue Cabs also at Beaumont Hospital.

She arrived at the A&E in Beaumont by ambulance having fallen asleep drunk while on a sunbed in her flat.

Anyway, she went into her flat and never came out. The cops said it would be pointless going after her because she had a couple of kids by different foreign fathers, and the likelihood of getting paid as she'll cry poverty, plus I'd waste a day in court.

It's good to know that the taxpayers are paying for her accommodation, her drink, her kids, the free ambulance, and her sunbed!!

great runner story. told yiz before. it had everything. pikeys, shootings, stabbings, arson, petrol bombs, house of horrors, gardai gettin threatened, comedy of errors, etc. etc.

a number of years ago i picked a jippo up in swords end of a friday night. around 23 goin to coolock. was tryna feel him out and he was deflecting everything. i get directed to a corner house on adare road/adare drive. how much is it i'll be back in a second he says he jogs not runs along the side of the house. it was the only house with a light on in the sitting room the rest of the street was blacked out. i was nearly certain it was a case of when you drop a jippo to a halting site they sometimes disappear and then an elder traveller appears and says here's your money sir. i had it in my head that he had gone in the house and just not bothered to come back out.

got out of the boat and went upta the gaff and knocked on the door a few times. no answer  made a silly decision to go upta coolock garda station around the corner. i thought i'd explain the situation and a garda would jump in there and then and come down to the house with me but when a guard appeared at the desk he said he'd dispatch a garda car. i go back to the house and i'm waiting around 20 minutes and i says this is rediculous the yoke is long gone i'm not sure at all he went inta the house and i went back to the garda station and i told him don't worry about but he said they're actually just there they're driving up greencastle road or sumtim.

i go back to the gaff and they arrive a few minutes later. they knock on the door no answer and leave a note and wunna them said i'll give ye a bell tomorrow. i had loadsa missed calls when i rolled owa the bag the next day but i didn't know howta access voice messages at the time. finally was able to get in contact with her and she gamme the story. they went round the next day and knocked on the door and they were met with a torrent of abuse and they were surrounded and all the neighbours came out. ye havn't a hope of gettin your lolly i was told. made an awful cunt of myself droppin them in it.

the house is in a permanent cycle of boarded up, fixed up, boarded up, fixed up, boarded up, fixed up. i found a news story that someone was stabbed in the garden and the front of the house was shot up on a separate occasion. there was a news story a couple years ago incidebt in coolock and the car in the driveway was petrol bombed. i never found out if it was a pikey nest or if the jippo knew of the gaff's notorious reputation and dropped me in it or what the story was. it recently sold for sixty grand or sumtin and the inside front is wrecked from the fire damage.

Sorry about your bad luck. 

I've always wondered about getting a deposit.  Say the guy does a runner.  You've lost the money but live to fight another day.  But if he paid a deposit, isn't he just a likely to punch you in the head and take his money back at the end?  Now you've lost money and you've got a sore head (or worse).  Scumbags be scumbags 'n all that?

Ifn it was an app job contact the relevant depot. I got paid by Free Now for a runner from West Kilmore recently... and I was only looking for the 15c commission that I was charged for clearing the job back! They never told me if they collected it from the client or just paid it as a goodwill gesture and/or an easy/cheap way of terminating an otherwise potentially never ending reaching out, reaching back, reaching back out, reaching back back, etc electronic mail exchange.

I've only once asked for money up front in the form of a part payment. That was a Free Now job from West Kilmore (Dundanial Road)... the little scrote picked up 3 accomplices from Clonshaugh and Clare Hall and went to Blanchardstown - apparently just to film themselves driving by a house as a form of threat against somebody else - and then wanted to return to West Kilmore so I told them there's €30 (I think it was €30 anyway) on the clock and they'd have to pay that if they want to return. They paid a euro or two over what was on the clock and said they needed to go to an ATM for the rest. I coulda gone into Blanchardstown village but decided against as it'd only waste time and even if they got out in Blanchardstown (bar an app offer coming back) I woulda driven back as far as Santry empty anyway. Never got the rest, they ran from Northside SC (not sure the ATM is even accessible there when the shops are closed?) but I still know where the little cunt lives... down to the bedroom he occupies!

On the whole I've been reasonably lucky when it comes to runners. In 30 years I could count them on my fingers and most (bar one in Rathoath) were for relatively small amounts and one or two even quite amusing. As a younger man I probably would've wasted time pursuing them but these days I wouldn't bat an eyelid. It probably helps if you think of it as giving them a lift that took 10/15/20 mins out of your life rather than them stealing the fare from you... they can't really steal what you were never getting anyway!

tell ye a funny story. my last official runners were two little cunts on jugback lane in swords. they legged it across a green. i got thinking and i said i wonder how long it would take to launch my little drone if i had it under my seat and fly off after them see where they go and then pounce on them. a few days later i went back to the same spot and simulated a runner. i powered on the drone and launched it out the window. "Red Zone. Dublin Airport. Red Zone. Dublin Airport" the controller said and the drone got confused and tore off on it's own and clattered in to the side of a gaff. i went to retrieve it out of someone's garden. how am i gonna explain this if i'm confronted i thought. better just tell them i was tryna peep in the bathroom window or sumtin.
