Having been there a few times I can't say I've ever experienced any ripping off or, indeed, any impoliteness from the locals. I've never stayed there though, only day trips to buy smokes but always enjoyed a pleasant luncheon and few beers. One lady did once advise me against carrying my Ryanair "free carry on" compliant bag on my back though, suggesting it's not unusual for pickpokets to target such bags. The bag only contained a cheap jacket at the time which was mainly to facilitate carrying a few bits and pieces (book, sunglasses, etc) that wouldn't fit in the bag after shopping!
