Church-goers in Letterkenny were left in a state of shock as an anniversary mass had to be delayed after a feud broke out.

A massive Garda presence was required at the Church of the Irish Martyrs in Ballyraine this morning at 11:30am mass, with the armed response unit on response and at last half-a-dozen Garda cars.

Bickering began in the porch of the chapel, which then spilt inside as Fr Dominic Thoomkuzhy was about to start to Gospel. The group dispersed outside into the carpark, where there was a significant Garda presence outside as well as in the church, who in turn broke the feuding parties into fractions and held them for some time.

Inside, parishioners sat in fear as the mass was temporarily postponed for over five minutes before swiftly concluding. In a message passed onto Fr  Thoomkuzh by the local sacristan, Siobhan O'Connell, those in attendance were told to wait inside the chapel for 10 minutes until things had cleared outside, where things had been quieten with a large number of gardaĆ surveying things. Declan Lee, who runs the church choir, apologised to Fr Thoomkuzhy on behalf of the local community.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Interesting how the different media dealt with it...

The Indo came straight out and said, "The five, all members of the Travelling Community, appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court before Judge Ciaran Liddy".

Looks like everyone else went with nudge nudge wink wink:

RTE - The five men are from two different families involved in an alleged fracas at the Church of the Irish Martyrs during 11.30am mass yesterday morning.
SW - The incident coincided with the first anniversary mass following the death of a well-known local member of the Travelling Community.
The Irish Times - The five men are from two different families involved in an alleged at the Church of the Irish Martyrs during 11.30am Mass.

Guy got killed in a graveyard by his brother and relatives because his daughter wouldn't marry a relative? (I think - all had the same surname and it was hard to keep track).

'Biblical atrocity': Man found guilty of murdering older brother in Kerry cemetery

Quote
A man has been convicted of a "biblical atrocity" by murdering his own brother in "an honour killing" during a Co Kerry funeral.  In returning their verdict on Friday, the 12 Central Criminal Court jurors unanimously rejected Patrick Dooley's defence that he was "no Cainite" and had tried to save his sibling Thomas 'Tom' Dooley during the attack.

<snip>

Mr Dean Kelly SC, prosecuting, had told the jurors that "honour" had been offended when Thomas Dooley's daughter had refused to marry the accused, Thomas Dooley Junior, and their relationship broke down. He submitted that this was "a score that was to be settled".
