I was up above in Dublin today so I dropped into Mechanic 24 @ c.15:19 to get my Hale Microtax 5 programmed. Not much of a queue, back out within 29 mins a ton and a half lighter. I reckon that's more than the meter cost back in 1999!
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

... quickly followed by a threatening email from NSAI, as follows:

The taximeter in vehicle registration 161D30438 with SPSV 16872 has recently been repaired/altered/adjusted by Mechanic 24HR on the 20/11/2024 and now operates with Checksum Tariff 19504 as recorded in Legal Metrology Form TTI36744.

This taximeter is currently not legally compliant with the Metrology Act and associated regulations as the security seals are broken/removed.

To comply with the Metrology Act and associated regulations, this taximeter now requires immediate verification by Applus Car Testing Services Ltd., the approved NSAI Authorised Verifier for taximeters.

To arrange a verification of your taximeter please contact the NSAI Authorised Verifier, Applus Car Testing Services Ltd. at www.legalmetrology.ie or by calling (01) 4135951.

Section 13 of the Metrology Act, 1996 states that it is an offence to operate an unverified taximeter for trade use and the Owner and/or Operator is liable to prosecution. If found guilty of this offence, your taximeter may be removed from trade use and you may be liable to a fine of up to €4000 or up to 12 months imprisonment, or both. Legal Metrology have successfully prosecuted Taxi Owners/Operators for this offence and intend to pursue all non-compliances detected to the full extent possible.

All supporting technical information related to your taximeter has been transferred electronically to the Authorised Verifier by Legal Metrology. A paper copy of the TTI form is no longer required to be presented to the Authorised Verifier by the taxi owner/operator.

The Dublin taximeter area once extended into parts of Wicklow hence those who held Dublin licences were given Wicklow when the county based system was introduced.

By point of fact the DTA also extended into parts of Meath but I was refused a Meath licence when I asked for it in the Carriage Office with no explanation other than "you can have Wicklow" offered.

... conversely, those who held Louth/Meath licences under the old system were all allowed Dublin if they wanted it... the explanation being that much of North County Dublin was in the Louth/Meath Garda district and was located outside of the Dublin taximeter area so drivers living/working those areas held Louth/Meath licences.

That's a bit harshly put, especially as you are legal to drive as long as you have a reseal appointment.

I booked my reseal fer early December just in case they make a bollix of the reprogramming on Dec 1st and it needs a Booster.

I thought it a tad strong myself, Ken. It makes no reference to being exempt from the relevant regulation on foot of being in possession of an appointment... maybe that's just a light-touch enforcement thing rather than a legal provision?

Good point RC ,that's before commission.and not including the extra euro PUC.

But it was just a quick rough calculation for the day tariff.
