Indo: Gardaí in major crackdown on bogus taxi driving operation in Monaghan

Quote
Gardaí in Monaghan believe they have made a significant breakthrough against a bogus taxi operation after a “significant number” of drivers were caught transporting passengers without having the required licencing or insurance in place.  The discovery was made during a combined operation which was put in place in the county town over the weekend involving both gardaí and National Transport Authority (NTA) officials.  The results of that joint offensive led to the seizure of several vehicles ahead of the expected issuing of court summonses to those involved in the elaborate ruse.

“There was a joint Garda/NTA Compliance operation conducted in Monaghan Town,” said a garda spokesperson.

<snip>

'Bogus taxi operation', 'Elaborate ruse', 'significant number of drivers'

Should make interesting reading if/when it makes it to court.  Reading between the lines suggests it was an organised group of bogies instead of a few lone wolves?  I guess it also begs the question how it got so big & organised before the Gardai intervened?

A. Jobs for redundant freedom fighters.

You're welcome.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Scumbags. Cant understand how the NTA dont push for major change in this area, they need to get the fines up way more plus the method of catching these guys has to change, follow the illegals and note down all the trips they are doing, the money changing hands method isnt working. guy in my local town flat out the last 3 and a half years, theres a guy in another local town at it since 1997, another guy in Donegal at it 10 years.

Revenue also need to get their finger out in these situations.

Leaning on the Shinners on account of the upcoming general election, I guess. At this time of year it could well backfire (if you'll pardon the pun) as it's the punters on their (invariably weekend) Christmas night out that'll suffer.
