FREENOW GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGNING UPDATE
Dear driver partners,

I wanted to reach out and update you all on some recent activity at FREENOW, as we head into the General Election on Friday.

As many of you are no doubt aware, we have seen growing calls from Uber, Bolt and the ‘Taxis for Ireland’ grouping to deregulate the taxi industry, through the removal of the WAV requirement and easing of the Area Knowledge Test, to allow for a significant growth of new taxi drivers. FREENOW believes this deregulation would not only threaten driver income through increased competition for fares, but create a two-tier network of drivers, with those who have had to pass the Knowledge Test and those who have not. This is something we wholeheartedly disagree with.

We know drivers are worried about the future of the trade, with issues like the unresolved VAT liability facing thousands of drivers and increasing vehicle costs impacting personal finances. We are also aware of the growing driver concerns over threats to physical safety, especially as we head into the Christmas and New Year period, and want to do all we can to ensure our driver partners feel safe and comfortable when driving.

That is why FREENOW has brought together representatives from across the industry to sign a joint letter to all candidates standing in this week’s election and calling on them to support taxi drivers. This letter, signed by FREENOW, Taxi Drivers Ireland, Hola Taxi, East Coast Cabs, and Lynk Ireland, calls for candidates to support five key policy asks to help safeguard and strengthen the taxi trade. These are:

Dedicated Garda helpline for taxi drivers to report abusive passengers.
Maintain Ireland’s high regulatory and safety standards for taxi drivers.
Increased eSPSV and WAV grants for drivers.
Mandate taxi app operators invoice to drivers from within Ireland (to avoid VAT liabilities for drivers).
Reduce Vehicle Registration Tax and toll charges for SPSVs.

I am delighted to say we have already received supportive responses from candidates representing all parties, and we saw a lot of positive media coverage surrounding the letter, with Founder of Taxi Drivers Ireland Derek O’Keeffe representing the signatories of the letter as spokesperson.

We will continue to push this agenda with the new government after the election, and will keep our driver partners updated on all activity.

Best,

Danny O'Gorman

General Manager

These are the same lying fuks that were complaining about how difficult the taxi test is a few years ago.Now they wanna pretend they like the test is important even though them and Lynk have their own mock SPSV training program that includes real questions and answers from the exam.

I really hope nobody thinks these guys are on our side.In recent weeks all I'm getting off Freenow is scraps from the ambassador scum.I currently cover four times more work on Uber than Freenow.Bolt is nearly dead.

I have no preference really for any of the apps. This really smells of desperation form Freenow going into Christmas.

Here is the Economics .If full time drivers were making huge money then there would be a reason for more taxis but they are not  Its a minimum wage job .The new Weekend fares are a tester to see if Drivers respond .The Goodbody Report suggested part time Plates for weekends and big events .This could be a fore runner to issuing part time plates if we do not respond .Everything that was proposed in the Goodbody Report has been implemented.

The bottom line is taxi driving after costs including freight as Goodbody suggested we all be with Dispatchers is not a viable job for somebody with a Mortgage and a Car loan .

The real question is which app will be the first to up the commission in January after the fare increase kicks in and the Christmas rush is gone?.Last time Freenow was very quick off the mark to stick the knife in for more money.

I can't honestly support a company that actively promotes e-bikes and e-scooters, which are uninsured and jeopardise the livelihood of every cab driver.

It also charges people €1.00 towards its profit-driven programme, people who will never use its so-called mobility vehicles.

Industry leaders call on election candidates to prioritise policies that future- proof the viability of taxis as a critical part of Ireland’s public transport sector

Taxi representatives have today (18.11.24) issued a joint letter to General Election candidates setting out key policy supports required to secure the future viability of the industry. The measures identified aim to address unprecedented safety threats, rising operational costs, and complex VAT issues that threaten driver supply.

Signatories of the letter include industry representatives and dispatch operators from across Ireland including Taxi Drivers Ireland, FREENOW, Lynk, Hola Taxis and East Coast Cabs. The group is urging candidates to support and champion policies that protect drivers and passengers while ensuring a high-quality, accessible, and safe taxi service across the country.

The letter highlights the urgent need for practical solutions, such as:

Establishing a dedicated Garda Helpline for drivers.
Ensuring Ireland’s regulatory standards and safety protocols are upheld.
Enacting a requirement for operators to invoice drivers from within Ireland to avoid VAT liabilities.
Increasing financial support for electric and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, which would support a more sustainable and accessible fleet.
Driver representatives have also criticised the Taxis for Ireland Coalition, led by Uber and Bolt, for a lack of engagement with drivers and its call to deregulate the industry – including the scrapping of the wheelchair-accessible vehicle requirement. There is growing concern that the position of the coalition does not accurately represent drivers’ and passengers’ needs or address the real challenges faced by the industry.

Signatories to the letter point out that the lowering of Ireland’s regulatory standards, as campaigned for by Uber and Bolt, would reduce the number of wheelchair-accessible taxis in Ireland and damage the passenger experience, with drivers requiring less knowledge of their area before receiving their license.

Founder of representative group Taxi Drivers Ireland, Derek O’Keeffe said: “Ireland’s taxi drivers are facing the biggest challenge to their livelihoods for decades, and our voices are not being heard in discussions about the future of the industry. We have more than 27,000 SPSV licence holders across the country and one of the strongest taxi supplies around Europe. Despite this, there are groups campaigning to lower driver-entry standards and safety while unknown VAT liabilities threaten to block drivers from renewing their licences.

“We are calling on election candidates to support our recommendations to protect and strengthen Ireland’s taxi trade, so we can continue to offer a best-in-class passenger experience.”

Danny O’Gorman, General Manager at FREENOW Ireland, said: “We believe the negative impact of industry deregulation is not something to be taken lightly and it would trigger a detrimental outcome for drivers as well as passengers. We work closely with our driver partners to understand their challenges, and FREENOW surveys have shown significant concerns about the impact a change in regulations would have on their livelihoods. More than half of drivers stated they would consider leaving the sector if it was opened to unlicensed drivers.

“As Ireland’s No. 1 taxi app, our priority continues to be supporting our driver partners and ensuring the best service for our passengers. We urge election candidates to support policies that protect Ireland’s taxi drivers and aid the industry’s transition to a more accessible and sustainable fleet.”

Advocacy Manager for the Irish Wheelchair Association, Joan Carthy said: “Ensuring accessible taxis are available for people with disabilities is not just a convenience; it’s critical to their inclusion, mobility and independence and is a right enshrined under the UNCRPD (United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities).

“The wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) requirements for new taxis and the existing WAV Grant Scheme are crucial to ensuring the accessibility of Ireland’s taxi fleet.

“We believe calls on the government to scrap measures designed to make taxis more accessible will result in increased isolation of people with disabilities from their communities. Therefore, the Irish Wheelchair Association supports FREENOW in their call on all political candidates to support the maintenance of WAV taxi requirements and extension of the WAV Grant Scheme to ensure Ireland’s taxi fleet is truly accessible.”

So, do they want to get rid of all drivers who never sat the Kathleen Doyle entry test or do they want an equivalent test at every licence renewal?
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Do you automatically become a brand ambassador if you rent a car with stickers on it?
