Uber Cash Rides
« on: March 18, 2025, 09:25:10 pm »
They're back... from Thursday... but this time round they're called trips.

Electronic mail from Uber:

Uber
We want to provide more earning opportunities

As of March 20th, Cash payments (cash, debit cards, Revolut) will be available to riders as a payment method. This means that riders can select to pay you Cash and not via the app, while requesting a trip. Cash payment trips allow more people to use Uber, and that means more business for you.

How does this work?
Cash payment trips will be automatically enabled on your account. By allowing Cash trips, you allow passengers to pay directly in the car. Before charging a passenger, check the driver app for the correct fare, as they may have a promotion. If a promotion applies, you will receive the full trip amount in your weekly payment.

Don't want to accept Cash payment trips?
No problem. Cash payment trips will be automatically enabled on your account. However, if you do not want to accept cash as a payment method, you can opt out of accepting cash at any time. Go to the preferences menu to opt out. If you want to accept cash as a payment method, you can opt in again at any time.

Questions about Cash payment trips?
Have a look at the FAQ page or contact support through the Driver-app.

Interesting

From https://www.uber.com/ie/en/drive/basics/cash-trips/

What happens if I forget to collect the cash or the rider won’t pay me?

You’ll always be paid for every trip you take. If your rider doesn’t have the money for any reason, or doesn’t have enough, you don’t need to argue with them or try and persuade them. Just drop them off and Uber will cover the cost within the Driver app. This is also true if you’ve forgotten to collect cash from your rider.

I've had fares where the passenger was certain their debit card was empty and wouldn't cover the fare and the job still went through on account.Maybe Uber know they'll have to come back eventually and are happy to give credit.

Free Now used to be like that... well exploited by students and such like. The trouble is they do have to pay eventually and they're probably charged extortionate bank fees for the initial payment failing. These days Free Now take the money up front... so do Uber in my experience.

In fact my last Uber ride was €8.68 for a metered fare of €11.40. They took €8.00 before the driver arrived and amended it to the full amount a couple of days later so they were only ever risking 68c in that instance.

... well exploited by students and such like.......
On speaking of such I had a young lad in the cab recently whom told me that he got Free Pizza delivered to him and his mates fer years till the Pizza companies found the loophole and closed it.

What they would do was order a large amount of food and pay fer it by Card, then go outside and sit on the wall waiting fer the delivery driver, whom would obviousely just hand it to them as they were at the correct address and it was pre-paid.
Then an hour later they would ring and say they never got the order and have their funds refunded.

But today seemingly you are sent a code to show your delivery driver before the food is handed over.

To be fair I was paid in full for the last runner I got from Free Now, job from West Kilmore to Clongriffin or thereabouts. I only entered into the 47 message long exchange to get the 15c back they charged as commission on the €1.00 that I had to enter to clear the job from my screen. Presumably they collected the fare from the client although they never told me that, it just appeared on my next statement.
