"Violence was meted on the taxi driver with a view to getting money from him,” said Garda Sugrue, adding that the victim tried to block the punches and beeped the horn to seek help.  Mr Cahill then produced an implement – believed to be his phone – to continue to strike Mr Tyrell. Garda Sugrue said no weapon was recovered but Mr Cahill used what came to hand.

Gardaí Sugrue said Mr Tyrell sustained damage to his teeth and his head, but a victim impact statement was not provided to the court. However, he has returned to work.

But... the judge said he was just out of jail and it won't be fair to send him back so soon  rofl

In making a decision on the sentence, Judge Munro said it was a sustained attack and Mr Cahill had not just used his fists but also a weapon.  He said Mr Cahill had served seven years, yet not long after coming out of jail he was in trouble again but he had to be praised for having a job and getting treatment. He said considering he had changed his life a trip back to jail might not be the best option.  Stating that three years jail was appropriate which he reduced to two years, the judge said he would suspend this in its entirety as long as Mr Cahill pays compensation within three months, does not use drugs or alcohol and is of good behaviour.

I wonder if this Aidan Cahill (Killarney) from 2018 (5.5 yr sentence) is the same person?

A Killarney man who savagely beat the mother of his child with a brush while looking for drugs has been jailed for five and half years at Tralee Circuit Criminal Court.  Aidan Cahill (29) of 5 Grosnover Court High Street, Killarney appeared before Judge Tom O'Donnell on Thursday having previously pleaded guilty to assaulting his then partner in her apartment December 16, 2017.  The court heard that Mr Cahill and his victim had "an extremely volatile relationship" and on the day of the assault Cahill - who was prone to "violence and controlling rage" arrived at the apartment looking for drugs.

<snip>

Judge O'Donnell imposed a seven and half year sentence and suspended the final two years for a further seven and a half years during which time Cahill is barred from having any contact with his victim.

Getting old is compulsory whilst growing up is voluntary.
