Ok DMG.....If it's a hybrid the first thing to come to mind is the coil packs.Mate of mine has a japo import Prius and it seems to go through coil leads/packs after a couple of hundred thousand Km..His one sounds like it's having a fit until you put the new ones on.

If you have an OBD reader it should show up some codes to get you started.

No charge..

Ah shame DMG.I'd be doing the usual and checking the mechanic put the exact OEM parts in.It's unusual for them to give hassle.

The MKII Octy failed the National Car Test on emissions for the first time in it's life last month with a smoke reading of 2.5, limit 1.5... so for the first time in it's life it got a fuel additive (namely Doc's favoured Dipetane) as well as a brand new air filter and fuel filter (despite not being due for another c.40,000 kilos)... brought it back and it passed the smoke test with a reading of 0.94 but went into a sulk and wouldn't let the inspector open the bonnet so he gave me a visual fail as he needed to check the under-bonnet VIN. Needless to say I tried to open the bonnet but old MKII was having none of it so I ended up breaking the handle/lever! It took 3 fucking hours pricking about taking the front grill off, the wheel arch liner and taking the broken handle assembly apart the next day to get it to a point where I could open and close the bonnet using a pliers in place of the handle so brought it back and got the cert.

Kinda ironic that NTA are making me keep that smoke machine on the road in favour of scrapping the Euro5.5 MKIII that's in showroom condition!

I don't think it was down to them being nice, Watty... although they (Phoenix Motors up above in Dublin) were very nice people to deal with. It was the law... and seemingly still is!

I got my Octavia off them as well!  Lovely people, lovely car.

... and you got your money's worth out of it... You can call me jealous and/or bitter... you'll not be lying!
