Time for an Environmentally Friendly Fleet?
« on: March 30, 2026, 12:37:05 pm »
Given that EVs have proven to be a popular choice for taximen and taxi drivers alike is it time for NTA to grab the ram by the horns and restrict all licensed taxis to EVs under 3yo?
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

No it's too early IMO.As soon as the grants dry up they no longer look cheap and their durability is yet unknown.

Mine is ok for now but I'd rather be in a hybrid Toyota for flexibility and parts. Not suitable for lads working long hours.

The words 'piss up' & 'brewery' spring to mind.  If they couldn't implement a 10 yr rule, they're unlikely to be able to do a 3 yr one!
Getting old is compulsory whilst growing up is voluntary.

You have to move with the times, Ken. I've long been an advocate of restricting licensed taxis to EVs under 3yo coupled with removing the current temporary moratorium on the issue of saloon hackney plates. I'd be inclined to further strengthen that position to restricting taxis to blue EVs under 3yo now that my hand has been forced.

Indeed. With modern technology that ought to be a no-brainer. I did hear they're experimenting with cameras mounted on buses to detect motorists breaking the rules of the road although that'll probably be restricted to detecting unauthorized use of QBCs.
