Car owners to be offered €8.5k electric vehicle grants in new State scrappage plan

People with petrol and diesel cars that are more than 13 years old are to be eligible for grants of €8,500 to purchase a new electric vehicle (EV) under a State scrappage scheme.

Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien is to brief Wednesday's Cabinet meeting about the pilot scheme and updates to the existing EV grant scheme, according to The Irish Times.  The price cap under that scheme, which provides a €3,500 grant to those purchasing an EV, is set to fall from €60,000 to €50,000 from July 31st.

The Department of Transport is keen to promote the purchase of small and medium-sized vehicles, rather than larger and more expensive models.  A sharp uptick in the numbers of EVs being purchased this year will exhaust the existing grant scheme, so an additional €30 million is to be allocated to it from the State’s Climate Action Fund.

The scrappage scheme will be operated on a pilot basis from July and will continue until a €10 million fund is exhausted, The Irish Times reports.  Owners of petrol and diesel cars aged 13 years and above will be able to secure grants of €5,000 for scrappage and a further €3,500 towards a new EV. It will operate on a first-come, first-served basis until the fund runs out.

A source with knowledge of the scheme said if it proves popular, it is hoped that a broader scheme would be introduced next year.  It is understood that 65 per cent of the scheme’s resources will be ring-fenced for rural areas, where there is a higher dependency on cars owing to a lack of public-transport options.  Just 35 per cent of the fund – or €3.5 million – will be available to residents of the cities of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.

Looks like we taxi drivers set the standard     and now the Govt is bribing trying to get the regular public to follow suit

 Ireland has the Highest electricity bills for Joe soaps in Europe now I tink  .... wen they get everyone captured  in an electric car  the price for charging yur ev will double ..... the " government "  will probly giv robot taxis half price electric rate like they do the data centers .....

Can't remember exactly but last time I looked the government take on a new EV like Tesla was about 9k in VAT and VRT.

After the car is bought the government will still be getting money from overpriced electric bills.Better than a kick in the hole I suppose.

I have Private Road tax on me EV .I wonder how long before they decide to tax EVs based on weight not output ..You can drive an EV with more energy output that a 4.5 liter Jag or 12ltr Bentley but pay small road tax .

It's all great fun thinking you're saving a tenner a week or whatever on diesel... not so much fun when the warranty expires and every repair bill is 4 or 5 figures. There's no age limits for private cars.

They're all ok till something goes wrong. If the warranty is up when that happens nothing on them comes cheap. An ID4 headlight bulb is c.€1,500 -vs- €3 for the H7 in a 13yo VW. Heard of another bloke paying over €4,000 for an inverter for his ID4. Far cry from an oil change every 20k kilos. Even under warranty blokes are paying 2 or 3 ton for an annual service on the Chinese yokes.

Im goin check it out 42 ... after listening to rats nightmare .... you can bring a prius to any mechanic shop .... theyll change the oil an filter an hand it back to ya ..... or if ya have a 14mm  socket an a filter chain do the service yurself ... its probly the greatest vehicle ever manufactured... not only is it practically maintenance free .... its fuel economy is spectacular .... are  these ev a step forward ?  Not yet ... indeed  potentially  a trap for taxation .. .... the only reason to go for an ev is the grant but as rat found out thers a risk .... I wont be takin it ... tested and proven unmatched reliability wins out

Had to resort to my 40yo chain wrench to change the filter on the younger not so young lad's Yaris over the weekend. I do have the cup yoke - which generally does the job on the Yaris and the older not so young lad's Corolla - but it wouldn't shift it... for some reason I didn't bother bringing the engine up to operating temp before draining the oil. Done the Corrolla too, I ran that up to temp though and the cup worked grand. FFS they're not even particularly tight!
