'The Doorman Fallacy' and (robo-)taxis

The Doorman Fallacy is a cognitive bias where decision-makers define a complex human role by its most basic, visible task, leading them to falsely believe the role can be perfectly replicated by technology or streamlined for cost savings.

Coined by British advertising executive and behavioral economist Rory Sutherland in his book Alchemy, the fallacy is best illustrated through the example of a luxury hotel doorman:

- The Consultant's View: A management consultant observes a doorman and defines his function solely as "opening the door".

- The "Efficiency" Trap: They propose replacing the doorman with an automatic, infrared sliding door, praising the massive reduction in labor costs.

- The Hidden Reality: In the long run, the hotel’s reputation and revenue decline. The doorman was also quietly hailing taxis, deterring vagrants, assisting with luggage, recognizing regular guests, and providing an air of luxury.

Why We Fall for It

The fallacy stems from our modern obsession with metrics, spreadsheets, and short-term cost-cutting. Decision-makers confuse efficiency (doing a single thing faster or cheaper) with effectiveness (providing the overall value and intangible benefits the role makes possible).

Saw this and made me think about us and robotaxis.

I like the last line - confusing efficiency and effectiveness.  Explains why I'm complete lazy (inefficient) and do just enough to get the job done (effective)  :P

Getting old is compulsory whilst growing up is voluntary.
