Taxi numbers
« on: July 18, 2026, 08:01:31 pm »
Anyone know how many now, particularly Dublin? They seem to be ubiquitous.Passed by the SSC Rd mosque last night, and there must have been a kilometre of taxis parked up on both side. Clearly it was prayer time, but apart from that it does seem that numbers are growing. Are they?

https://www.nationaltransport.ie/taxi/statistics-and-legislation/vehicle-licences-statistics/vehicle-licences-statistics-2021-2025/

You can have a root around the NTA stats page above but 18.9k vehicle licences in 2021 and 21.1k in 2025.  ~2k new vehicle licences nationally in 4 years?

https://www.nationaltransport.ie/taxi/statistics-and-legislation/driver-licences-statistics/driver-licences-statistics-2021-2025/

Drivers are 25.4k in 2021 up to 27.9k in 2025.  So ~2.5k increase nationally over 4 years but most of them are likely to be in Dublin?

We're a dying breed so new blood is needed (imho).  Immigrants find it hard to get 'proper' jobs so self-employed taxiing is one option?

Unemployed.... it could be worserer than that... we might end up employed! On the other hand it mightn't be as bad as you think.

The age profile is probably interesting in explaining the apathetic approach to the future of the trade. The majority are clearly beyond the feeding, housing and educating childers phase of life so most likely don't give a flying fuck how long the trade remains viable to younger men. The less new entrants the better as far as incumbents are concerned, I guess.

Bit mad that there's still men over 70 driving cabs... FFS a lot of us aren't allowed use cars over 10 years old and those cars are subject to up to 4 roadworthiness tests per year yet doddery old fuckers are still clogging up the virtual ranks with absolutely no heath checks for drivers.

Post-retirement, having access to the bus lanes might be worth it depending on where you live.

Fair enough but post retirement you have access to bus lanes... on buses, free of charge. There should, at least, be some sort of cognitive and refex tests to pass if an outright compulsory age based retirement requirement is considered agist in our modern PC world.

It seems highly unlikely that the over 70s are going to be out battling with drunken youths in the big cities when/where any perceived shortage of taxis generally occurs so they are of limited use as far as satisfying (perceived) demand is concerned.

"Bit mad that there's still men over 70 driving cabs." Mmmm, you're right, health, lifestyle, alcohol consumtion, smoking etc. might be more appropriate deciders in who should be diving cabs, at any age.

Indeed. There should be comprehensive tests for all drivers just like there is for our cars. I guess, as with the cars, that wouldn't necessarily preclude arbitrary age limits on whatever ad hoc bases might make sense to the authorities from time to time.

Speaking of numbers, 60***+ don’t seem to be searchable on the database

Fixed.... but licence holders are no longer updated and will be shown as Unknown or with the name of the driver associated with the licence when it was scanned -  who may or may not be the plate licence holder - appended with a ? for relatively recently issued plates.

Bigger increase (in percentage terms) in under 30s from 1% to 2%.

The Omni and Northside shopping centres are cases in point.
