The updated feature brings the price of an Uber below the $2.75 that San Francisco charges for a bus ticket.

This is partly in response to the fake taxi drivers getting tickets when they pulled into bus lanes/double yellows to pick up passengers.  Caused a bit of friction because pax expected to get collected anywhere and drivers didn't want to stop in bus lanes etc.

I guess it serves to compete with buses/trains/trams/rickshaws as well as taxis.
