Picked up a body this morning working on the new Tesco in Liffey Valley she says the new shop will require 40% less full time staff than other Tesco stores .The checkouts  half of them will be self service but in two years they will all be clever trollies that will register the price of the goods as soon as you put it in and take the cash direct from your bank as soon as you pass a check out post ,she says the goods in will be able to tell what is being delivered without any body checking it in but the bit i likes was she said the supplier only gets paid when they sell the goods so when they do stock taking goods out plus stock in store subtracted from goods in ,if there is any shortfall then that stock must of been stolen or not delivered so the supplier picks up the losses not the retailer .The just in time system will reorder stock autimatically based on how quick it is selling and how long it takes to deliver from supplier .A lot of jobs to be done away with before driverless cars take ours

Just thinking the advantage of the computerised smart trolley eliminates the tills speeds up people keeps a check on stock it makes sense but a driverless taxi cant drive any faster costs the same on fuel probably a more expensive vehicle ,The cheapest part of the operation is the operator does driverless taxies actually make economic sense .

I think the biggest selling point will be safety. Driverless cars will operate within the rules of the road and there won't be any driver to rape and/or murder the riders, the latter being of particular significance in a market like Ireland where taxi unions have consistently complained about drivers with serious criminal records or unverifiable records being licensed. I think many riders would be prepared to pay a little extra if the arsehole in the drivers seat was removed from the equation.

Is there a 'sat-nav' for taxis?

When needed, I use Google Maps on my phone.  AFAIK, you can set it to be a pedestrian, private car or bus.  The bus setting is maybe the nearest setting but we can't use contra-flow bus lanes or some parts of the Luas that buses can.  I set it as a private car but don't follow Google Maps blindly because I know I can use bus lanes.

Who's gonna pay for google maps (or Garmin etc) to come out with a taxi 'sat-nav' for every city/country around the world?  I guess MyTaxi have some data but I'd imagine it's quite complicated to turn that in 'taxi navigation' data?

As far as I recall, Sygic had a taxi setting which worked reasonably well up above in Dublin, It's a while since I used it though. The bus setting on Google seems easiest to use, you either know your way round the contra flow bus lanes or take a chance, I guess.

Jobs for redundant taxi drivers, I guess. Daimler will probably pay a bonus if you can scoop 20 litres of puke/excrement during a defined peak period.
