Diver Safety Warning
« on: January 03, 2018, 06:52:36 pm »
Email from mytaxi:

Hi Stephen,

Happy New Year. We have recently been made aware that drivers operating in the Dublin North-West area have been the target of planned robberies.

We are currently assisting the relevant authorities with their inquiries, but please contact your local Garda station should you have any further information.

The Gardai have asked us to request that all drivers exercise caution when picking up or dropping off passengers in this area. If for any reason you feel unsafe, avoid this area.

Be vigilant and use your best judgement at all times, report all incidents and any information/suspicious activity to An Garda Síochana.

Staying Safe: Tips

Please be cautious at pick-up and drop off locations. For example, ensure you have the correct location, and call the passenger.

Always ask the passenger for their name, avoid mentioning the name on the account when the passenger arrives.

Activate your find my phone app by following the relevant download link for Android or iOS.

Record the IMEI number of the phone. You can retrieve this 15 digit code by typing *#06# into the keypad on your smartphone.

Stay Safe,

The mytaxi Driver Team
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

All pointless, the thief is going to take the battery out or switch it off straight away. Might make sense to hide an old phone in the boot, it doesn't need a sim to call 911.

I wrote down my IMEI number on a notepad at home, I don't know if it will ever help, but it can't cause any harm.

As fer taking out the battery, I don't think you can do that anymore with Iphones, I have a '5 S' and it seems totally sealed except fer the sim port and charger point.

I just did a 'Find my Iphone' check on my P.C. with my phone turned Off
and it had me within 10 meters of my own home.

Turn it off when you're 12.7 miles away from home then go home with it in your pocket and try to locate it without turning it back on.

Yea, I'll do that some night soon and revert.

Does it have to be exactly 12.7 miles away ?

20 kilos will do, give or take a yard or two. AFAIK, Androids aren't reachable when powered down or when internet is turned off so it'll be interesting to see in Apple have a sneaky little app running even when the telephone appears to be powered down. Depending on the result of the experiment you may need to repeat with internet access (apparently) disabled.

It was Thirteen years ago that a terrible tragedy took place in Cork.
A young lad went missing and after a huge search fer him, nothing was found.
These were pre-smartphone days and the Gardai did eventually trace him Five days
later by some sort of Triangulation system on his mobile phone even though the phone
had long since powered down.
