People not being able to rely on the service is a far bigger problem than too many taxis, a Taxi using culture has developed in Dublin as users are (were) confident they can (could) get a taxi (for their morning commute or trip to the airport for example) back before deregulation they made sure they were up early enough for the bus or had organised a lift, that's why Taxis in Dublin are probably busier than those in Monaghan despite Monaghan having 3 times as many passengers per Taxi.
Dublin is in Danger of losing it's Taxi using culture if confidence in the service reduces much further.
A few more Taxis probably wouldn't be a bad thing.

They're on the way don't worry.Me brother was telling me there has been a rash of taxi test passes recently amongst his mates.It will be interesting to see the numbers from the NTA to confirm any change.

Stop feeling so sorry for customers.There are taxis just not 10 outside every Spar shop 24 hours a day like there used to be.4500 per year is what you need to earn just to stay afloat in this business.That's not viable if we're back earning nothing again.

Dont like to see stories like this in Sunday Papers .As I posted Junior Minister Griffin has done absolutely nothing since he came into office ,one week after the UBER  ECJ judgement he was in the papers saying there is no lack of transport in rural Ireland (He is right plenty of people have cars ) then he said he was in favour of tech to solve the availability problem . This time last year I was sure the rules would change .The ECJ were meant to issue their judgement in March but they did not until December .Now the government know the judgement lets see if Rural TDs and busnisses can twist their wrist to get something sorted .Remember its probably an election year a lot of TDs will be looking for small victories .

The figures reported come from https://www.nationaltransport.ie/taxi-and-bus-licensing/taxi/taxi-statistics/active-vehicle-licences/ but how do they allocate National Licences to individual counties?

The given figures for total licences in issue - which include Taxis, WATs, Hackneys, WAHs, LAHs and Limousines - are reasonably accurate but with many taxi licence plates displaying multiple counties the county by county breakdown cannot be correct as the county by county total given is equal to total licences in issue whereas, in fact, the correct county by county total must exceed total licences in issue.

You don't need as many taxis in rural areas because pretty much everyone has a car or a tractor.  You need a car to buy a pint of milk in the morning.  Transport only becomes a problem when rural people want to get drunk outside of their homes and then seem unable to think of anythng other than their personal car to get themselves home afterwards.
