Carlow taxi driver says St Patrick’s Day traffic restrictions coming at huge cost to his business

https://kclr96fm.com/carlow-taxi-driver-says-st-patricks-day-traffic-restrictions-coming-at-huge-cost-to-his-business/

While excitement is building for the parade in Carlow – the traffic restrictions today are having a huge effect on other people.

A row has already broken out between taxi drivers and the county council.

Jimmy Byrne is an independent taxi driver who says all the taxi ranks except for one have been blocked off and can’t be used.

Speaking to KCLR News this morning he says he was told in no uncertain terms to move his taxi but he’s staying put:

“No notification or anything that they were blocking off the rank. No notification whatsoever.

“I can’t go to my place of work. I’m parked at the barrier here at the beginning of the rank at the roundabout.

“The one rank that’s available is at Penneys and it’s full and the main taxi rank has been completely blocked off.”

Joe, I was protesting and would'nt move my car when instructed. My car was impounded by the Gardaí and I missed the busiest night of the year Joe.

You'd probably be on the Penny's rank 'till Christmas.

If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

If it was anything like Dublin, you'd be better off cruising around the edge of the parade.  The amount of people throwing themselves at my taxi today was incredible.  And grateful, very grateful, once I let them in.

Might hitch a trailer to the back of the taxi next year and maximise my earnings  lol

Valid compliant. How difficult would it be for the fucking council to post a notice on the rank a few days in advance. Could have saved him the bother of going to work.

It is a Valid complaint Stephen, but most likely when Mr Byrne was making his complaint and standing his ground on not being allowed on to the Carlow Taxi rank, he most likely had to turn away a half dozen or so fares knocking on his window in order to make his complaint.

It's a matter of principal. How would a council road sweeper like it if he turned up for work only to be told that he can't access his brush and cart?

A matter of principle, by definition, takes precedence over potential financial remuneration.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.
