Uber breaks self-driving car record: First robocab to kill a pedestrian

Quote
A woman has died after she was hit by one of Uber's autonomous cars in the US.

The taxi app maker said it is cooperating with the cops in the wake of the death.

According to police in Tempe, Arizona, Uber's vehicle was driving itself, although it had a human pilot behind the wheel, when it hit a woman crossing the street. The accident happened on Sunday outside of the crosswalk near the intersection of Mill Avenue and Curry Road, according to telly news station ABC15. The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to hospital, where she died of her injuries.

The collision is believed to be the first fatal prang involving a self-driving car operating fully in autonomous mode. Computer-controlled vehicles have previously had accidents, but none until now involved loss of life. Yes, people have died in Autopilot-equipped Tesla cars, but Tesla's technology is more super-cruise-control than truly hands-free autonomous driving.

San Francisco-based Uber's CEO took to Twitter to offer his sympathies:

Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened. https://t.co/cwTCVJjEuz

Uber has suspended all self-driving car tests in Arizona, San Francisco, Canada, and elsewhere, following the death, it is understood. A spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

An Uber autonomous vehicle crashed into a bicyclist in Tempe overnight. Uber isn't saying much at this point, but is pulling self-driving cars off the road in Tempe, Pittsburgh, SF and Toronto https://t.co/YOacuWFRoB

Arizona has been one of America's regions where self-driving cars have been permitted to operate under state law. A number of US states, including California, have been considering their own laws to allow self-driving cars to run on public roads without a human behind the wheel at all.

Bit of an over-reaction to suspend service. What would happen if cars were banned (say, for 48 hours) every time one was involved in a fatal RTA? I wonder how many lives autonomous vehicles have saved?

Newer reports are saying that the police have looked at the video on board on the Uber and it looks like the woman did a kamikaze move in front of the car.  Nothing, human or robot, could have stopped in time.

Only in America...

Convicted armed robber who was behind the wheel of self-driving Uber when it killed pedestrian as she wheeled her bike across a road

- Vasquez has felony convictions for attempted armed robbery and making a false statement and was jailed from January 2001 until November 2004
- Vasquez was convicted under her original name Rafael but now identifies as a woman

A lot more common in Ireland, Watty. As SC used to remind us, a huge proportion of licensed taxi drivers in this jurisdiction have serious criminal records... and that's only among those of us whose records are verifiable.

Difference is a private company in America types your name into a computer and decides whether you're fit to be an Uber driver.  Here, the Gardai presumably look at a person in the round and decide whether they're safe to be let loose on the public.

However, should the Gardai decide a candidate is not fit to drive a cab he just has to go to the District Court to get the decision overturned e.g. Gerry "The Monk" Hutch et al.... and, of course, the immigrants are given the benefit of doubt where their records cannot be ascertained/verified.

A background in armed robbery or joyriding could be useful skills if a passenger is looking to get somewhere quickly.

And an ex-'freedom fighter' who might have spent hours driving around small roads in the dead of night could be useful as a night driver.

Strange as it may seem the Shiners actually want ex freedom fighters banned from driving cabs but are more than happy with immigrants whose records cannot be verified being licensed. I doubt may clients would like to be sat in a motor car being driven around Dublin by Gerry Hutch these days!

The woman stepped in front of the robot.....
Which is completely apportioning blame to the woman..... But the fukin robot ( which is supposed to eliminate human error catastrophically failed and fuked up 100%
