I was lucky enough and young enough back then to be part of 'Jackies Green Army' that marched on Rome in the summer of 1990.
Probably one of the best experiences of my life, I attended all 5 matches, the high-light of course was beating Romania on penalties.

The picture below is of me and some Brazilian chick taken on a bridge in Rome over the Tiber river on the way to the Olympic stadium to play Italy.

I was on the 'Booze cruise', a luxury liner sailing around the Mediterranean ocean full of Irish supporters and docking at each port.
First stop, Cagliari to meet the English, tension was high in the boat all day, the air was electric.
Lineker got the First but Kevin Sheedy (with the compliment of a Mick Mc Carthy throw-in) got the equalizer.
We partied Hard all that night.

Next stop was the 'Gippers' (Egypt) in Palermo, a most boring game, the Gippers played fer a draw and got it.

Back to Palermo again 4 days later to face the Dutch, the Irish fans are seated below the Dutch fans in the stand.
"Fook this" I'm thinking, "If we go a goal up then them kounts will pelt down on us".
'Full of Beer' I hand me mate Conor me camera and tell him; "Take a picture of this".
With that I leave my seat and head up in to the middle of the Dutch fans who welcome me with open arms,
Conor takes his photos and all is well, the Dutch above us now love the Irish below them.

Ruud Gullit scores the First goal with an awesome 'Wall pass', and Quinner latches on to a goal-kick
fer an unlikely equalizer. News filters through that England are a Goal up on the Gippers in the group,
meaning that if we and Holland drew that all 3 teams would qualify to the next round.
A very boring 20 minutes of football followed, neither side making any effort at all.

Next back to Genoa (home stadium of Sampdoria) where the Booze cruise started from, to face Romania.
It was sad too see the Romanian flags in the stadium with the middle crest cut out of them after their independence.

Georgie Hagi fer Romania had his usual spectacular game but could not break through the Irish defence,
so it was down to 'Spotters'. When David O Leary scored that final goal I just sat in my seat, completely
in awe and close to tears thinking; 'What de Fook have we done ?"
