For Ken really, I guess.
I was chatting with a man in a public house recently who's had nothing but expensive trouble with his Toyota DPF. During the conversation I recalled reading that VAG DPFs won't regenerate automatically - something they do quite frequently - unless there's more than 1/4 tank of diesel available. I've since double checked the service manual and that is correct. Now, I think I recall you (Ken) telling me that you never fill your tank, opting to minimise weight instead. Might be worth checking with a Toyota service manual or expert if Toyotas behave in a similar fashion...

Toyota stopped making diesels yers ago .....is that not enough to make you realise that your doing something very wrong if yur driving an antique?

The greens are buying your current car, valued at €7,350*, from you for €20,000. While that is undoubtedly a good deal it's not without consideration. In return you must buy yourself a brand new car of their choice for c.€35,003. When you buy yourself that car you undertake never to use it for your own personal needs outside of business and to keep it in public service for 3? years.... so if (God forbid) you have a crash or if the car suffers a fault requiring parts that aren't readily available or you get caught popping into Tesco for a pint of milk with your car in the car park they'll want their €20,000 back... and they'll keep the car you sold them! In short, the greens are making you spend €15,000+ on a car of their choice that you neither want nor need, the mean and nasty cunts!
* https://www.carzone.ie/car-valuation (https://www.carzone.ie/car-valuation)
On the other hand, Dr. Leo gave you €12,953 in 2020, €11,984.40 in 2021 and €2,899.60 in 2022*. That's €27,837 even after the cuts introduced by Meehaul, free gratis and for nothing ... to spend as you saw fit.
* assuming you got the same as me
Dr. Leo is great so he is... roll on COVID '20!
Happy to oblige... You're welcome!

Thanks Stephen, sorry fer late reply, only just seen this topic now.
You did indeed mention the same before a few years back and since then I have always kept my diesel tank at over 3/8 full as you suggested back then.
The final cost to me in ready notes fer my DPF filter replacement after trying various services and excluding time lost and transport to variuos services was a whooping 7.5K. (Long story).
It was just before Chrimbo that I paid the last 5K to Toyota fer a replacement DPF and it stung like a Bitch, I paid it and shrugged it off and forgot about it. I will never ever drive another Diesel car again.

That Avensis D4D broke me back and wallet. The list is exhausting of experts and parts and cleaners.Biggest expense was refurb injectors.Imagine every winter night having to spray quick start into air filter and jumping into the car to start it. Toyota expert admitted that they did not know the fault,so could not fix it. Should have scrapped the heap and saved the stress…….

there are obd tools that show you the live soot amount in grams present in the dpf. bring your car for a blast on the motorway and watch the amount lower in live time.

Ken buying that heep was the greatest Fuk up ever, your 08 shitbox would still be on the road until 2026. And ifn ya kept it ya could scrap it and get €20k off a lekky heep, or keep it on the road until 2026 with no repayments and buy a brand new hybrid outright.
Anyway hope your on the road soon.

ken all you havta do is use dipetane consistantly.
it makes the diesel burn completely.
pour a bottle in and do a few laps at 2000rpm of the m50 in cork or whatever it's called and wait for the dpf to get cleaned out and the dpf message will dissapear. she has the same car i havta do it for her a couple of times a year.

I know someone who took their DPF out, the car is running better now than it was 3 years ago, and it has very high mileage.
-
Get rid of Diesel .Eamo wants 30KMh zones .Diesel wont regenerate at that low speed .Hybrid or EV is the future for taxi business .
-
Lot of people dropping back to Diesel from Leccy. Depends on what you read?

Agreed Panel, I jumped ship too soon trading in the '08 in 2020 with seemingly then 3 years left on the license.
The thieves in Toyota now want another Monkee fer some 02 sensor thing, hopefully have it back on Friday.

I can easily get rid of the DPF message by running a cleaning agent through it, but it comes back after a few months.

it will come back because its collecting carbon and soot constantly.
when the message reappears that's your cue to take it on the motorway and blast heat through it to turn the carbon and soot to ash and empty it out. you do that by holding the revs at 2000rpm in 4th gear constantly while doing a few laps. it blasts tons of heat through the DPF. depending how blocked it is it could take upta 30 mins. monday morning at 4am when there's no traffic on the motorway is always a good time. nothing to get in your way. using dipetane consistantly drastically lowers dpf problems because it makes the fuel burn completely.
if you don't use a drop at every fill up the EGR, DPF, intake manifold and injectors are going to get repeatedly choked and cacked up with carbon and soot.

On all my old heaps, they got driven from one entrance to the next exit on the M50, and dropped to third gear at about fifty MPH.
Always passed.

Belker, you work hard to make money but I cant understand why you are pissing it all away on the DPF, just get it taken out, everyone does it. best thing you will ever do. what is the point of keeping it in? :-\

In fairness, he's quite clever for a Corkman :P I believe he saves ~€5k/yr and that gets him a €20-25k motor every 4-5 years. It's not a bad strategy. He just remained loyal to the Avensis model too long. Maybe he should get a new Camry hybrid next time and see if that gets him up to retirement age and then he can decide what to do after that.

I tink johnny was cleverer gettin a bran new electric for 15 k I tink he said ......anyway its not all bout the money ...the heap o.shite has caused him stress for 2 years ...if its not lights flashing at him an turbos blown up.then is ther a timing belt on that yoke ? How much has that yoke really cost him?
I've the same brake pads on me prius an its 6 yers old ....apart from me heat exchanger fault that cost me a DIY €20 euro fix .....
I've had zero problems an the maintenance is miniscule.....I've never once checked anything on it not even the lights before an nct ......ide imagine these new electric cars are even better .....for his mental health an comfort he shud consider scrappin it .....life is to short in me opinion O:-)

I dont' find that to be the case. Had black, black, silver, and now white. Black was the worst. white the best for not noticing the dirt as much.

The Toyota service manager loved to talk and as much as I tried to quieten him, he went on about stuff that I did not understand fer a good 20 minutes, in the end charging me another Monkee fer something that caused the DPF light to come on but seemingly was not the DPF ??
-
I did ask that if the DPF was not at fault in the first place, then why was I charged 5k last Chrimbo to replace it ?
Which led to another 20 minute speel from the Toyota guy who seemed to really know his stuff on DPF's, wheter he was telling the truth or not is another question ......
-
DIPETANE.
I asked the Toyoya service manger about dipetane and he said (during his 10 minute lecture on it) that it is great temporarily and will get you past NCT but eventually the soot temperatue will rise and the DPF will not be able to clean it.
-
Like I said earlier the man loved talking and he stated to me that it was a BMW engine in the 171 Avensis and then he stated; "BMW sold us a 'Pup' the couldn't control the DPF as they wished and the engines were no good, that is why we stopped selling Avensis diesels in 2018".
To which I replied; "But it was very Fookin nice of Toyota to sell on this 'Pup' of an engine to me !", to which he did not (fer once) reply.

The basic history of the car, after taking educated DPF advice from Taxi friends, my local mechanic that I trust and just about everyone else.
Bought the car in July 2020 with a 12 month warranty.
DPF light came on 13 months later in August 2021, I didn't know what a DPF was back then !!
Tried a few various cleaning agents and motorway driving which always cleared it fer 3 months.
My local mechanic told me Toyota were the only ones able to solve the problem and booked me in with a mate of his in Toyota to diagnose the problem, they wanted €2.5k to replace it in the summer of 2022.
I decided to get it cleaned by JD motors who specialized in DPF cleans and my local mechanic agreed it was a good idea.
Paid JD €600 fer the DPF clean and thought that was the end of it in Aug 2022.
3 months later and the DPF light is back on again, contacted my local mechanic and JD motors and it was agreed that it must be a turbo problem, so paid JD another €1450 to fix that and replace some Fookin flywheel thing.
The day I was supposed to be collecting the car from JD motors in January 2023 at 1pm I was told the car was still being worked on and would not be ready till 3pm. Which was a Lie when I went up to collect it at 3pm the car was in their carpark still completly frozen over from the night before ??
Through 2023 the DPF light came and went and I took the advice of many Witch Doctors and added Dipetane and all other sorts and drove it at various speeds on motorways, they all worked fer a small amount of time but the DPF light always came back on.
I eventually 'Bit the Bullet' and booked it in to Toyota to have the Fookin DPF replaced in early December 2023, they baulked and insisted on trying something which cost me €300 and a half tank of fuel, but the DPF light was off.
Two weeks later it was back on and now Toyota wanted €4.4k to replace the DPF fully, I eventually, reluctantly agreed, a day later they found some other Fookin problem and needed another €300 to fix that, which I again paid.
Eventually got the car back mid December, now over €7k out of pocket and the Fookin DPF light comes back on last week just 3 months later !!
-
After my overall experiences so far with the DPF problems, is that I think I may have been led up the garden path by many professionals who actuallty didn't have a clue themselves how to sort the DPF problems.
Fer me with 20/20 hindsight being a great thing, I reckon I could have saved myself the €8k in DPF costs so far by just putting a decent cleaning agent in to the cab diesel tank every time the Poxy DPF light came on and gave it a half decent 20 min run out the motorway.
Anyways'nall I still do Love me 2 liter D4D Avensis, she purring like an Daytona Angel this weekend just gone and we went through some Fookin serious weather down here last weekend, if only it didn't have the Poxy automatic handbrake and the Fookin DPF I would love it a lot more.

Ken ....its false economy..... yur bean rode up the bum an bled dry ....
It's actually cheaper to buy a new car than keep entertainment that demon ....
I highly recommend ya buy a new car ...yu won't know yurself ....I tink the real problem here if ya don't mind me sayin is ...that yu don't recognise that " change " is inevitable an that a time of " change" has come opon ya ...an that yur puttin it off in the misguided an blinkered opinion that yur saving yurself money an grief ...yur not .....despite the fact that yur a bookie math genius....wen it comes to yur taxi yur not lookin at all the facts an benifits of jumpin in the deep end of movin on from the past an that parasitic heap o shite ......I urge ya to tink of not only the economics but yur mental health an attitude .....look at all the blokes on here who hav baut new cars recently.....ther all makin more money ide wager cause they love gettin into that new car wit the new car smell an no fear of lights flashing or havin to form an intimate relationship wit the local backstreet mechanic whos payin his mortgage on ther backs ....
Hal since he got that new car hasn't been on here nearly as much ...he's too busy ....merc the same....delighted wit himself savin on fuel , workin longer hours wit gusto an trouble free motorin ..evin johnny wit his new motor has found a hole new world of pleasure an motivation in taxi drivin .....yur yoke is Killin yur spirit Ken an draining yur wallet .......
I'm a mad cnut Ken as ya know but I'm bettin to fuk yur tinkin of a new car ....an I'm telllin ya if ya are .....to go for it .... ::sleep

keep bleedin tellin people and i just can't fuckin get through to them.
it's ingrained in people that you use Dipetane once a year before an NCT or some bollocks or when a DPF problem appears.
YOU USE DIPETANE AT EVERY FILL UP SO YOU DON'T GET A PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
diesel is a dirty burning fuel. not only is the soot collecting in the DPF it's cacking up the EGR, intake manifold and the injectors.
You get a complete burn of the fuel with added Dipetane so there's no carbon and soot build up and it'll work to tackle the backlog of build up that's already present.
-
@ken, I don't think any of these "professionals" set out to rip you off, but once their diagnostics were proved wrong, they were happy to steal your cash anyway, they all saw the same fault code, and decided.... its must be a clogged Dpf... let's clean it.... when that didn't work... it must be a flywheel, let's change it!... when that didn't work.... it must be super clogged, let's change it.... when that didn't work... it must be a faulty sensor... let's replace it... etc etc..... in reality, their guess is no better than yours...
If it was me, I'd drive on without doing anything else, and clear all faults 15 minutes before my next nct.

Ken Check out fast chargers in Douglas or slow chargers on street .Diesel and Petrol set to go up .It still might be worth your while taking the 20K and getting a EV the MG5 is the best value motor on the Road @15K and bits .An ev using street fills might still be cheaper to run than a solid fuel motor ..Looking at The Early School Leaver I doubt the Grants will be available for next year .

Get rid of Diesel .Eamo wants 30KMh zones .Diesel wont regenerate at that low speed .Hybrid or EV is the future for taxi business .
VAGs will regenerate at any speed. You'll notice the start-stop doesn't operate and idle revs increase while it's doing it's thing.
-
A basic OBDII reader would probably have told you (or led you to research allowing you to conclude) that changing the 3Arena sensor was the logical next step, Ken. Have you googled the price of the sensor? Being a VAG owner I've never replaced one but I think it just screws into the exhaust.... a simple enough job with the right spanner!

I thought my Avensis was scrapped but it turned up in Newry and was locked doing 110 miles per hour on the motorway. Effin thing had a mind of its own and would only start, when it felt like it. Deamon car….it was! ::fds

Rodent you have your well appointed seaside multistory close to the Motorway to exercise your engine every day .I was sitting on the stairs down the flats pondering this Emissions thing and trying to pick the Grand national winner for Saturday .Now if you only train the Horse over short gallops they wont stay the distance but give the beast plenty of work and he will have a better chance of staying . Decided on two against the field Galvin and The Panda .

I can change a puncture or a light bulb in the car Stephen and that's about it mechanically.

Dpf light has come on the odd time in my shitbox, I throw a bottle of JML
DPF cleaner into it at every service and give it a run out the M4 have to make sure ya have a full tank of diesel and keep it above 2.5k rpm, all ya have to is spay it up steam of the filter by taking off the pressure sensor and spay liberally.

That Toyota service manager is probably driving a Toyota with the DPF taken out, he knows the real way to deal with them.
I bought a 5 year old taxi for 14,000 euro and my biggest bill fixing it was 1000 euro (new DPF which only lasted 1 year) and there is nearly 360,000 miles my car now. If I ever have DPF issues again with a car, its coming out and n0t being replaced, that 1000 euro was a total waste of money.
haven't had a DPF warning in 3 or 4 years thankfully and I will never have one again on it even if I get to 500,000 miles.

I'd be careful with taking out the DPF as an option. This year or last, the NCT started downloading the car's computer brain and fault codes. So far, they're not doing anything with the data but eventually they will. Could it be a fail if you drove the taxi for, say, 20,000 km without a DPF and the fault was recorded in the car's computer brain?

Did you price an aftermarket DPF on autodoc.ie . I'd be surprised if it's much more than a monkey... throw in a ton for half an hour of a mechanic's time and your sorted... probably for at least as long as the original OEM pieces of shite last (200,000 kilos?).

I'm about 8K outta pocket on the Fookin DPF problem to date with the biggest 4.4K replacement bill to Fookin Toyota last December, 10 months ago in 2023 (with a 12 month warranty), and yet again the Fookin 'DPF Full' light comes back on last weekend.
Obviousely the Fookin light went Off after filling it with diesel this morning before I rang Fookin Toyota to book it in fer a Fookin €120 diagnostics check next week. As much as I love the car fer it's performance and size, this Fookin DPF has me at my wit's end !!
-
Hey Belker I picked up a lady from rural Cork somewhere off the train recently and she had a diesel Toyota with the BMW engine and it gave her awful trouble.Sounds like Toyota know these engines are trouble.
If you have the money I'd be shopping for something less likely to empty your wallet.Toyota know about this problem and are leading to up the garden path. But you know this already.
Your fuel bill will be halfed in the hybrid and you'd eventually recover some of the change over cost of a hybrid Corolla.

Buy a Corolla or Prius hybrid and be done with it.
€8k bill for any heep is lunacy, I would of shot my heep in the fase if it cost me €8k.

Why do you think Toyota ran to the door,to get out of the Diesel manufacturing of engines. A manager told me that they could not understand why the system of particulate recovery, was giving problems and they could not fix it.
So they fixed it by investing in electric shit?
….I tell ya yay yay yay

ken you just needta go for a blast on the motorway to empty out the dpf. my sister has your car. every 6 months she rings me and says the dvd thing is full again. go upta the motorway on a quiet night no traffic. fourth gear at 2000rpm. stick cruise control on and sit back for 30 mins or so. that's all you havta do.
-
Thanks fer the comments lads, but I do happen to Love me 'Kick-Arse' Avensis, and the Fookin DPF is still under warranty till 12/12/2024.
Much as I'd like 'Maguire and Paterson' to do the job fer me, I still can't buy a new one and as it's still under warranty I'll let Fookin Toyota sort it out fer now.
I'll never buy another Fookin Diesel car ever again !!

Indeed that is the plan going forward DMG, when the Fookin thing is eventually outta Fookin Toyota DPF warranty. I'll just put a 300ml can of VB26 'Smog Doctor' in to the half-full tank and run it full blast fer an hour or so on the motorway by night.

Best time to sell it is while it's still in warranty.
