My son is in Canada on a college exchange program. He sent me this post. His Irish flatmate got it from a family member. The official letter is standard notification for standby duty. Defence Forces response to an aide to the civil power request from Gardai. The content of the social media post is less reliable but indicates Govt might be expecting the need.

Defence Forces on standby isn't the same as pictures of empty shelves. Pictures of empty shelves is some initial mild panic by people who react without thinking things through or either from a lack of information.

The Defence Forces going on standby is  a preparation for at worst dealing with that panic but more than likely to assist with crowd control and traffic movement as the gardai dont have enough bodies.

The point being is the government must be anticipating or  expect to implement traffic restrictions measures and that may impact public transport.

The bus and train unions are calling for measures to ensure driver safety and social distancing on public transport.

If this succeeds there may be a larger demand for taxis.

That is why I posted it to this topic. I should have been more clear with my point but I got excited when my phone rang about a fare and I pressed the post button.

Im so confused about this bloody illness benefit payment.here is the questions im trying to get answers to,and nobody including the citizens info are very clear.firstly,I know you have to have a letter from a doctor,I understand that, but do you actually have to HAVE coronavirus,or if like me you are high risk and advised to self isolate do I qualify ?
Sounds you need a note from your GP or a hospital doctor.  Here's the official line.  Read both.

The Government has also stated that self-employed people will be able to get either Illness Benefit or Supplementary Welfare Allowance.

How to Apply
Step 1

If you are an employee or self employed and feel you may be suffering from Covid-19 or may need to self-isolate, you should contact your doctor by telephone.

If the doctor is satisfied that you have Covid-19 or that you should self-isolate, they will advise you accordingly.

The doctor will then complete a medical certificate on your behalf and send this directly to the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

To receive a payment, you will need to provide your doctor with your:

Yes I must say,it was not complicated at all.she simply said she would be concerned for me in the circumstances, entered something on the computer, gaveme an illness benefit form to fill out at home (about 4pages but nothing compkicated) you can also claim for a dependent adult

Im hearing rumors that Luas drivers are to hold a vote to withdraw service due to risk of infection from passengers .Company says that they must wait for government to make the decision as they are liable for a fine of 100k per day for every day the service does not run and if the drivers withdraw their service the company will go to the commercial court and go into voluntary insolvency .Meaning drivers lose their jobs and only get statutory redundancy .
