The new Governmeent is expected to bring ever-increasing pressure on the taxi industry to switch from its current diesel-heavy fleet to electric cars.

As with consumers and business fleets, taxi operators have been put on the same 10-year notice that sales of petrol and diesel cars will end in 2030, and all new-car purchases will have to be electric. The Programme for Government, however, takes special aim at taxis, saying that: “The taxi fleet has a disproportionate impact on air quality and climate emissions in urban centres.” The three parties go on to say that they will continue to support “the greening of the fleet” and will continue to provide financial incentives to switch to both battery-electric vehicles (EVs) as well as plugin-hybrid vehicles.

Vinny is incorrect to say the Tesla model 3 does not pass suitability.There's one down in Cork plated up.It was mentioned on here.Anyway they're €48000 before grants so not a chance.

The NTA could easily have offered grants off the regular hybrids that are much cleaner than diesels but they didn't bother their arses.

The fact that this is in the lifestyle section of the Irish Times says it all.Not really a story.

Merc we should of been spoken with and a deal lets say No VRT no VAT should of been on the table offering a subsidy that only brings the price down to the same as a new Diesel was never going to be an incentive .

There's very little VRT on a hybrid and zero VRT on a leccy car already.

Unless they make diesels significantly more expensive to plate up there won't be any change.

I'll repeat this...there is no Hybrid or electric wheelchair accessible vehicle on the Irish or Uk market for under 50/60k.

It's not even an option.So I'm not feeling any pressure while the wheelchair fleet is plodding away in their diesel vans.

I don't really understand them giving grants for plug in hybrids....not worth a jaysus wank,40miles(at a push) on a charge and it then becomes a normal regenerative braking hybrid and on the model i had a look at in my local Toyota dealer..it only has room for two in the rear!! ......the newer model takes three now afaik......doggers love three in the rear....so i heard!!

I dont think we really need to worry .This government wont last pissing time .The Greens will be back down to 2 TDs after the Election and the Country will be broke after Brexit Taxi industry will boom as like the 1970s most people wont be able to afford to own and run a car .I read over the Programme for Government It would cost about 30 Billion over the first five years our government dont have fifty euro .Green party leadership vote is due in a few weeks whichever side loses will start stirring it .I read that FF are looking for a Rat among their own who grassed out Cowan .A lot of dissapointed men who didnt get Ministers cars and coin .Budget is due in September could be like FG in 1981 something small like VAT on Childrens shoes could bring the whole lot down .Greens might think they got something that the others wont give them and pull the plug or the raal Barry Cowan scandal might surface the drink driving thing might just be a sighter ??.

Green Policies as Pat Rabbitt said "Sure ya would say anything at election time to get elected "What we will see is Traffic regulation by Frustration .Block College Green then access to car parks which will then be demolished and office blocks built on the sites or appartments people will be forced on to public transport by frustration .The future for the taxi industry might be bright after all .I think there is a plan to ban private cars from O connell Street so access to Ilac carpark will be restricted easier to take a taxi or bus than try to park .Same on South Willian if its blocked how do you access the car park .The cunt selling the 4euro cup of Tea or Coffee on the highway wont have any customers as they wont be able to get into town and park .City Center will Die out of town shopping will be the new day out .
