SB you can get on a renters policy for 3k AFAIK.That was precovid.

While things are shit the prices will plummet again. It cost me less than €1800 to have my own policy nearly eleven years ago.

All them newbies complaining about high insurance may not have even gotten a PSV if the test was kept harder.

It's not just a matter of one question extra to answer. But a significant number of candidates may have only gotten 60/65/75% pass rates but gave up after the second or third attempt.I've heard of candidates sitting the test nine times at €85 a sitting.

I know we all use google maps but I don't underestimate the value of tougher geography testing.

Are all rental taxis balls of $hite? I had to rent one for a few weeks one time and it was a death trap, you would have more comfort in a tractor.

Unless you've worked in Dublin City with the huge oversupply we had 8/9/10 years ago you can't see where I'm coming from.

I did the 14 hour days to gross a ton.I did have nearly 3hours on a rank only to get a €7 fare. It's horrible.I'm not scared of rideshare as thousands of surplus legal taxis doing as they please is much much worse.

During the war..

I would just quit if it was ever that bad. keep the licence for when the recession is over.

Unfortunately there weren't many jobs that would keep the bills paid back then.Luckily I was gifted with much more naivety and enthusiasm.Maybe that's why I'm afraid to go back now..

It seems half the fleet would swap Taxi driving for basic unemployment benefit , hopefully this will seep through to the populous thereby extinguishing any desire they might harbour to enter the taxihood.

The wannabe taxi drivers probably just think we are lazy. sure I was going to put 24 hour service on my business cards before I started. I forgot I needed sleep.

As mfh states, the taxi is a economic lifeline during the bad times if your costs are at all manageable, in 08/09/10/11 we didn’t have the 9 year rule which helped and most of the fleet was like scrap heap challenge.... god I miss those days!!

So at least 2 posters on here are fraudulently accepting the payment whilst working, extrapolate that out and it'd be a fair percentage of drivers, welfare should be setting up checkpoints to catch these cheats
I've already posted this but here goes :

When I was getting my daisies fitted 2 weeks ago the NTA inspector told me that they have the power to go into FN or any other despatcher  and demand info on what taxi driver are working, they can (AND DO) pass this on to revenue to take action as they see fit.

He also told me he was down the country the previous week and were monitoring "Taxi Drivers" working for delivery companies.

I'm sure they are also out and about on the look-out.
they have done this already with ck2.... Anthony actually rang the drivers to give them the heads out before they got the call sw...

How is it an economic lifeline if you aren't making money?

Panel will be on later to speak for himself.... but in the absence of any other work you could put in lots of hours to make a living driving a taxi.Seems great until you burn out.In no other job would you be allowed to drive for 6/7 days a week doing regular long shifts. Most just kept going doing the hours hoping for an improvement. All the rentals were busy with tradesmen and labourers who got laid off after the tiger died. Most of them wouldn't have been on the road had the test been tougher earlier.

The ten-year rule and the app dominance mean we could be still getting buttons but handing out much more.

I've been moaning about this for years but others may be realising now that they may be overstretched financially when it comes to changing vehicles post Covid.

I knew a guy driving a 1999 8 seater taxi in 2017, there was no age limit on it for some reason. something to do with the roof number. them lads are lucky enough compared to the 10 year and 15 year age limit taxis. I wonder are there many of them around these days.

Do the hours and you’ll make something that looks like a wage at the end of the week. As I’ve already stated that the 10 year rule on most cars and the reliance on apps are the two great unknowns of this time round.

What’s worse competing with 10000 other taxi drivers for a fare or competing with 140000 unemployed for a job?
