The latest list of rates of COVID-19 in Dublin shows hugely encouraging signs that we are winning the battle against the deadly bug.
The figures from Ireland's COVID-19 Data Hub show that the rate per 100,000 in most Local Electoral Areas has fallen by hundreds in the space of a week.
Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart remains the worst affected LEA in the capital with 1005.5 cases per 100,000 in the period between January 19 and February 1.
But while the rate remains high, it is a big drop of 266.2 compared to the two week period up to January 25.
Lucan has the second highest rate with 852.8 with a drop of 140.6 from last week.
They are followed by Ballymun-Finglas on 805.3 (a drop of 294.5), North Inner City on 787.6 (a drop of 221.6) and Ballyfermot-Drimnagh on 768.4 (a drop of 321.3).
Dundrum is the LEA with the lowest rate per 100,00 after dropping 267 to 315.1.
It is followed by Killiney-Shankill on 325.6 (drop of 281), Stillorgan on 337.6 (drop of 314.7), Glencullen-Sandyford on 355 (drop of 196.6) and Howth-Malahide on 359.8 (drop of 288.6).
The biggest drop came in Kimmage-Rathmines which fell 415.3 to 494.1.
Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, Professor Philip Nolan, revealed at a media briefing that rates of the virus had fallen across all ages and the R number has dropped to well below 1.
But he urged a note of caution, warning that the decline in cases is likely to slow in the coming weeks.
He said: “The next few weeks will be difficult for all of us, as we bring the daily case levels below 1,000 per day, our progress will seem to slow down.
"It is now more important than ever that we continue our efforts to bring case numbers down towards the very low levels we achieved in June and July.
"In that regard, it is very good news that our estimates of the R number are well below one – in the region of 0.5 – 0.8.
“I noted last week that the testing of close contacts will impact on case numbers in the coming days.
"We shouldn’t be disappointed by this, it shows that we have moved from the mitigation phase of the last few weeks, back to the containment phase where we are tracking down every possible chain of transmission."
