The deceased man walked from the city centre to the entrance of the airport, about 5km,  where he sadly was knocked down as he crossed through hedges and straight onto the main airport exit road. I personally know the driver involved and sadly, his behaviour was unacceptable, he drove down to the bottom of the airport hill, around the roundabout and back up, then straight down again, slowing, but not stopping at the scene of the tragedy, as he approached the bottom of the airport hill he received a job offer from the Kingsley hotel going to the airport, and knowing the personality of the guy, that was something he couldn’t refuse, “a handy job”.... after dropping his next fare he came upon a checkpoint a little after the incident scene, where he was arrested. It appears that his main concern a few days later was that his car being impounded, he couldn’t access his credit docket book to claim his credit payments from his base. That’s all I know about the situation.

Certainly seems to have got his priorities mixed up !

Who writes this shite? Can't be Ken as he's  out sick.

It was Christmas time, he attended a Christmas party in the city, he failed to get a cab, he had a room in the international hotel in the cork airport business park, he walked the 5km to the airport. There’s nothing “shit” about the facts of what happened.

That I added extra context?
That a deceased man walked anywhere.

43 years ago, I was driving from Kilcoole to Dublin, withh my sister on  dark January evening. Suddenly as if from nowhere there was an oldish man in front of my offside front headlight. He was collected up on to the bonnet, I slowed, trying to keep him there,  but he fell onto the road. He was naked from the waist down, and his trousers were around his ankles. No mobile phones back then, so I left my sister with the man, and drove to Greystones Garda Station which, at that time, was closed at night. I got the sergeant, who lived overhead, out to the scene of the accident. When we got back there was quite a crowd there including some of the man's family. Very surprisingly the man's adult son came over to me and said " don't worry about this, I don't know what he was doing here". I was never contacted significantly again by the gardai, but I did hear that the man died, that he had a drink problem, and that my insurance had paid out £25k. I can't recall if there was a significant effect on my insurance premium.

I was out working a Tuesday night years back and I picked up two fellas who were plastered drunk, dropped one of them off and the last fellah was going to harmonstown, got yappin and he said he was in court today as he knocked down and killed a nun, the fellah broke down crying telling me the story and I comforted him the best I could, the story always stuck with me as the fellah was genuinely in anguish and upset over the ordeal. https://www.google.ie/amp/s/www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/courts/circuit-court/van-driver-fined-500-over-fatal-crash-that-killed-nun-70-1.2133385%3fmode=amp

Some fares always stick with ya, I’ll never forget this one as it seemed to completely upturn his life.

Korky set the scene well but I'll add a bit to it.
I have been working that hill fer the last 12 years in early morning runs but I have never encountered heavy rain AND dense fog as the defending brief said, it's either one or the other, never both.

The airport hill in Cork is mostly a 100kmp speed limit and there is no street lighting on the top 2km section where the incident occurred.
There is no footpath on the airport hill but it does have cycle lanes on both sides.
Why the Doctor (RIP) was walking up that hill at 5am after his christmas party is a mystery to me, by 4.30am in Cork on even the very busiest nights, we (Taxi drivers) will have the streets hoovered clean of customers and there would have been plenty of Taxies available from 4.30am onwards.

I wonder did the pedestrians profession have anything to do with the sentence?
If he was a homeless man or a junkie for example....just saying ........4 year probably kill him at his age ....
Was the pedestrian responsible for any of it?
Most likely ....was he wearing a hi viz in that weather ?
Why didnt he wait till ther was no traffic in them conditions to enter the road ......?
Awful sentence
Good questions Octy.
Coming home at 5am from his christmas party it's unlikely that he had a hi-vis jacket on ??
Was he intoxicated ?

And the real question that I want the answer to is what part of the road did the collision take place on ?
as in, in the middle of the downward carrigeway or in the cycle lane or by the grassy kerb ?

I think we all know the answers to the above.
It was an accident as in the Taxi driver did not set out to hit and kill the pedestrian and if he had done the right and decent thing then it would have went down as an accident, but he didn't, he acted the maggot big time fer whatever reason as he had done no wrong till that point.

At 75 and from Ballyphehane 'RA' territory he will do easy time in Cork prison, the RA heads will quietly see to that, but most likely he will still do the guts of Two years. The prison authourities like to clear out the prisons as best they can fer christmas every year so most likely he will be out fer christmas 2022 on TR which actually is a sentence end.

Got his sentence halved!  4yrs reduced to 2.

Hit-and-run taxi driver (75) who knocked down and killed renowned psychiatrist has sentence halved on appeal (Indo)

Quote
<snip>
Court President Mr Justice George Birmingham said that it was “certainly unusual for someone who comes before the court in their mid-70s without previous convictions to end up with a sentence of that magnitude”.  Mr Justice Birmingham, presiding, with Mr Justice John Edwards and Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly took some time to consider the matter.  He later noted that McSweeney had come across gardaí investigating the death later that morning. Gardaí asked him about the damage to his taxi. After initial denials, he had admitted striking a pedestrian.  The court noted that he had driven professionally almost all of his life but had surrendered his licence after the incident and put his car up for sale.  Mr Justice Birmingham remarked that the sentencing judge had not believed that McSweeney had acted out of panic, but thought that he had acted out of callousness. However, he said that the Court of Appeal found evidence of very confused thinking, and that this case lacked aggravating factors often found in other cases.

The court found the sentence to be excessive and quashed it, substituting it with one of two years instead.

Getting old is compulsory whilst growing up is voluntary.
