It's not an offence to have an unsealed meter in a taxi unless it's plying for hire. Only a licensed driver can ply for hire.
Yeah, yeah, sure Joe! But I have to feed the  childer Joe. I'll  have to bring them to the Vinny just to get by Joe!

...but nobody got fined. Even at that, happening upon an enforcement officer is a once in a lifetime chance, in my experience.
17 and a half years since the invention of the taxi regulator,  never been checked.
Doc, you worked right through the  Covid 19 pandemic caring not a jot about bringing the virus home.
So why would you care what a toothless NTA Goonda might say?

there is/was no virus.
You keep telling yourself that ...

how many people do ye know that were "made comfortable" in hospital. how many people do ye know went in to hospital with a minor ailment and came out feet first. i know loadsa characters. my father checked inta beaumont with a dose of the auld twist n shout on his right toe and he never came owa the kip.

It was you who committed the offence. The same would apply if the vehicle was unroadworthy, as many rental vehicles are. Count yourself lucky you're not black or you might not have lived to tell the tale.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Indeed. I trust you enjoyed your drive to Carlow or wherever it was you went to not get the meter sealed or well peeled or whatever you call it.

I got a new meter to go with my shiny new EV taxi.  The next meter sealing appointment was something like a month away.  Technically you could be fined but you can't expect a self-employed driver to park up for a month or two just because he was doing his bit for the environment and all the little children on planet earth.

Same with your taxi driver's licence.  The Gardai give you your paper licence which is the legal bit but it takes the NTA 4 or 5 months to actually give you your plastic licence which is the bit you get fined for.  Technically you can't work until you get your bit of plastic but obviously it's ignored as long as your licence application is on file.

We're great in this country at making rules but hopeless at enforcing them.  Don't stress it  :2cheers

Watty after all the money you've spent, would you not be better off getting an 9 to 5 job ?

What money? The NTA paid for 60% of my new EV and the Govt have been throwing free money at me/us for almost 18 months!

It's not free money and what did the 40 % cost, then insurance etc etc?

If you don't take the grant money and you're due a vehicle change, currently it's a no brainer, especially with the cost associated with a new or secondhand petrol or diesel car with no grants and you still have the same insurance costs anyway.

You're missing the point.
We pay for everything unlike bus and train drivers.

Car was 32k, give or take. 20k grant.  My costs are the same as everyone else, except fuel.

PUP was free money - all you needed was a bank account and PPS. There was a huge amount of fraud!
