Back to the Future Pre Dereg
« on: April 30, 2022, 02:45:53 pm »
A lot of talk in the media(newspapers/radio) and social media about "the lack of taxis".

Indeed we even had Mr Vinny Kearns on the radio talking about the shortages of taxis.
Remember him?
He use to "represent" taxi drivers interests against the very people he's turned into. Funny what a few bob can do to ones principles.

Another theme getting a lot of mention is drivers at night pulling in for people, rolling down his window to ask the potential passenger where they are going, and is he doesnt like it, he wont take them.
Its not  good behaviour I think we can all agree, but it does seem to be happening more often than not lately and giving us a bad name.

There are 154 hours in a week and it's very busy for about 4 of those hours every week which leaves 150 hours which there are more than enough and some say still too many taxis trying to get a living out of this. ::fds ::fds ::fds

Kearns is a rentier, taking a commission on rented cabs. Cab companies are feeling the pinch and consolidating by joining up to try and thwart economic goliaths like Free Now.

Speaking of which - Why do an extraordinary amount of Dublin's taxi firms seem to settle for Dublin 8? What's the attraction to a run down area? Surely it's not just the Guinness factory!

I agree 100%. If people could easily get a taxi between 12 and 4 am friday and saturday nights, then it wouldnt be worthwhile being a taxi driver because you would make peanuts. People are just selfish and demand a taxi the minute they need one, like the arsehole who wanted me to forget about the customers I had agreed to pick up last week at 3 am, oh bring us home first or we will give you more money, expecting you to kick people out of the taxi in favor of more money.

Make day work unviable so all the trolley dollies on supermarket ranks would have to work at one of the two busy hours at the weekend.

I got a good job out of the 'Killer last night. It took me a half an hour to the drop and a half an hour empty on the way back, all for one punter.
It's one of the largest pubs in Dublin, all emptying out at the same time, madness.

Exactly the same ones who throw a tantrum if you cant bring them. I had a family ask me at a rank lately to bring 5 of them to another town, I cant carry 5, only 4 I said. The parents say thats ok, then the daughter who was around 20 gets thick and starts bitching, I called her over and asked her what was up. You have a 7 seater and you wont even bring us home. ah I can only carry 4 people as I just told you. spoilt brat.

To be fair, so-called taxi drivers' representative, Jim Waldron has been saying that since long before the COVID '19 anall pandemic. He told the press that thousands of drivers have left the trade to pursue more lucrative vocational opportunities and that entry costs are too high.

The authorities clearly don't listen to drivers, maybe the bosses have more clout?
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.
