I never really had any issues with the coolant on mine but yes there are two different coolant loops. One for cooling the engine and another for cooling the inverter.I think...

Isn't there two seperate coolant systems in the Prius, one for the batteries and one for the engine? I know that's the case with the hybrid Starlet or whatever it's called these days.

Yes Rat....
..
First off I don't see any much reported gen 4 prius head gaskets goin...an I've no coolant in the oil or visa versa but that doesn't nessesarily mean it isnt the head gasket but ....I believe twas an issue wit earlier models but not this model
Secondly I won't be bringin this problem near  the dealer ...I've bean gettin it serviced ther mainly for warranty but
I've zero confidence in them ....in fact I'm absolutley positive sure they'll fuk up me car ....

I'm waitin till  I can get it on a hoist an check for leaks but ..I'm sure I noticed too much steam comin out the exhaust the other nite .... it was a cool nite so again unsure ....but  i havnt looked inta it but I've  this  option

https://youtu.be/0N7_crTRDus

if it is the heat exchanger assembly ...

if it's stops usin the coolant then  ...I'll be sure I've found the problem ....assuming the piping is the same which I'll check Tommoro or wen I get off me arse

Anyway I m inclined to believe this is a common problem on this car so weel see how it develops.....
Still tucking into the mince pies an left over Christmas cake to be arsed  much  ::sleep

Something yis may not know but if you get the car serviced by the main dealer they automatically extend the warranty on most parts up to 165000km or ten years. It's called the relax warranty so check it out before ya touch anything Octy.

Bloke in Toyota told me about it when I had the deposit on the Corolla last year.He says nobody really talks about it.

Steam coming out of the exhaust is normal in this weather Octy.If yer not using the heap the exhaust gets condensation in it too.I doubt there's anything wrong with it.No harm checking it out though.

I had that issue when I first got my prius octy. Luckily it was still on warranty. They replaced the head gasket, so they told me. The problem persisted.  They disconnected the coolant system from the exhaust. The problem persisted.  In the end they replaced the whole exhaust, so they told me and its been fine since. When I first went to them Yer man tried to say it was just steam. I assured him it wasn't as it completely filled up the 3 lanes on the m50 with white smoke. No amount of steam will do that. Also when it was ticking over in my garden the smell from the exhaust was a strong, acrid type of smell. Rotten actually.  In the end I took a video of the smoke pouring out of the car and Yer man politely agreed it wasn't steam. My suggestion to you is drive it around for a bit to heat it up and then pull in and put your foot right down on the accelerator to fire up the petrol engine, hold it there and when the smoke or steam starts coming out have a good whiff of it. Hopefully it's just steam but it sounds like the issue I had, unfortunately.  Best of luck.

2017 octy. I'd be telling them to check the coolant is not leaking into the exhaust before they go near any head gasket.  Unfortunately I can't tell you how much my problem cost to fix as it was done under warranty, thank God. Did you have a whiff of the smoke yet?

I havnt really had the chance to look at it yet Horse....but it's highly unlikely to be antin else causing it ...
I'm tinkin this is a big problem with this model ...
I'm actually dumbfounded thers no coolant  low level warning
Device fitted to the car ..its gross negligence wit this problem wit the heat exchangers leaking ...
Ide say thers plenty fuked up engines goin around...
Anyone buyin a new prius shud be alert to this problem...
Anyway I'm goin  try bypass it ...because if it goes this early ...the next one will go aswell in another 100k ..an because the cat is part of the assembly ....I don't even want to ask toyota how much they are .....
Anyway I won't be buying another prius wit a massive achilles Heel like that ......

I'm sure if you type Gen 4 in their search engine someone might be able to shed light.
