I'm not sure how much of the short period of Independence within the 26 counties you remember or falls within your comprehension abilities. They'rer not spoilt brats. They're educated. Menial jobs don't require any education. Today's Irish education system simply doesn't produce uneducated kids hence we are heavily reliant on first generation migrants to do those jobs. As CB alludes to these jobs (while simple in nature) are essential for any economy to function... but the problem runs beyond that. It's not just unskilled neck down jobs that Irish educated kids are (or consider themselves to be) over-qualified for. Our education system has a strong focus on the tech sector to such an extent that we are leaving ourselves short of skilled (and relatively highly paid) tradesmen as well hence the need to accommodate half the population of Poland to keep our building sites running and keep our gaffs painted and unblock our jaxes and wire in our EV chargers, etc, etc...

How or why would you tell a kid who's earned a degree that he ought to drive a cab or empty bins for a living. Cop on to yourself, FFS!

What's your view on wasting school places on girls? Have you read the constitution of the short lived State yo miss so much. A woman's place is legally in the home so why are they being taught accademic stuff... surely they only need to know how to cook and clean?

I think that the Irish went to America ,Brit land ,Canada and were sent to the Aus ,as desperate people who would do most corrupt things to survive in countries where the Irish Catholic Immigrants were hated.They survived through corruption and hard work. The U.S and others are big Countries and could absorb and needed bodies at the time. On the other hand Ireland is a small Country that cannot absorb the policy of taking in every Tom Dick and Harry and bussing them to Holliday Hotels with benefits forever? The young Irish privileged have said to me  in the Taxi ,that they are cleaning offices at night in the Aus but nobody knows that back in snobby Ireland. There are a lot of angles to it?

Not at all. It's a great little country, one that I'm happy and proud to share with any others who may choose to join us. Part of what makes it such a great little country is our ability to recognise and act upon our limitations whether that involves looking to (second generation) migrants (Pearse, Devil Era, Varadkar, etc, etc) for leadership or farming out the regulatory bits. Maybe not a degree (which is a Level 8 qualification nowadays) but some sort of course.  You can do a course in almost anything nowadays.  Wanna work on a building site - you'll need a SafePass.  Wanna work in a warehouse, you'll need a manual handling course.  Wanna work as a cleaner, there's probably a course for that too.  Good thing for the Govt statistics as well is that they 'disappear' off the dole numbers as they're in active education!



Ireland has higher rates of third level education than EU average, data shows

I dunno much about stuff but the over emphasis on the degree has made it lose it's value now that there are many Irish with degrees and then those immigrants coming from abroad with degrees are diluting then even further.
