Sumup really pissing me off
« on: April 17, 2023, 10:46:02 pm »
I've no idea what causes the App to not connect with the terminal, but I feel it's going to cost me money when some card-paying pleb can't tap or use a pin on the damn thing.

Last night I was dropping a punter to Clongriffin, and on arrival, the terminal started acting up. He suggested force-stop, which I did but no use.

Then he said to switch off your phone, wait then turn it back on. Finally, the damn thing worked.

The meter fare came to 21.40 but by the time the App' worked, it was reading 30+, not on my good man.

Any suggestions on more reliable terminals?

Mine has worked perfectly for the past few yers (without incident) ....since  ratti pointed out that you allow your phone to connect with the card reader without touching the power button....
In the past week that has changed ...I've had several connection problems within the past week or so .... oops

i had the basic sumup for ages but i usta have agro gettin it to fire up. i did'nt know whether to turn it on first or let the app wake it up. you turn your phone bluetooth on and it connects to the bleedin car sound system insteada the sumup device. what i shudda been doing is turn the car off so there was no conflict and then let the app wake the device up. i ended up gettin the standalone 3g device but that sometimes acts the maggot so i retained the old sumup yoke and use that as a back up.

Yeah, I found Sumup increasingly unreliable and you never knew if it was gonna work or not.  So a few weeks ago, I switched to a Square Reader and it has worked like a charm since.  Commission is about the same as Sumup.

Downsides for me are that it's a tiny little thing with no screen so you might get suspicious customers not paying because they can't see a number on a screen.  But it hasn't happened yet.  Battery is small so you need to keep a USB cable in the taxi just in case whereas Sumup seemed to last forever.  And it pays out daily instead of weekly but maybe there's a setting I can change?

But it's reliable and quick to approve cards!

I had trouble getting money out of Paddy power a few weeks ago and our kid had trouble collecting Grand national winnings .It seems under Money laundering Legislation cards or Not Present devices have a limitation on payouts .It might be that you need to reset the machine or reconfirm your identity .If it cant pay out it might not let you process a card .i had trouble with a Sum up its about 8 years old I disconnected it from my Phone scrubbed the Id and re entered the details .Neve had another problem since .

For about €120 you can get this terminal from square, which tethers to your phone hotspot.

Prints receipts too .

That's very fancy. All good ideas.

I have changed the IBAN and BIC to another ROI account, I wonder would this have a bearing.

What happens if they've to stick their card in and type their pin? Is there room to stick a card into it? You know the way sometimes you've to do it in a shop or whatever when ur paying card, I think it's a security thing or something.  Sometimes I'd be getting a packet of skins, sorry a lighter, ye know, a euro or something but you've to still insert the thing anyway.

There is a slot for putting the card in and *I think* they type their PIN on your phone but don't quote me on that.

I have one of them as a backup.
It pays instantly onto a card they send you,so it doesn't go near a bank account.
Only problem is that the card let me down too many times,by being locked up,and you need to call their 'customer service' to unfreeze it.

I had PIN problems with a sumup terminal a while back, I just bought a new one fer 20 or 30 Euro, delivered the next day.

I do sometimes find that on first use of the terminal some nights it can be slow to start up, which was easily sorted by opening the sumup app on my phone and keeping it on in the background.
