EV Grant approved, is there any VRT relief?
« on: May 09, 2023, 12:44:24 pm »
So I got a grant accepted for a few grand, are they still doing VRT relief, or grants for home car chargers? I know they were doing VRT relief last year up to 5k but can't find anything for this year?

The VRT relief is done by the dealer.Cant remember exactly but anything under 60k pays no VRT.They'll just put the VRT calculation into the price they give you. Then you need to apply for the NTA grant after you've paid in full for the vehicle.

The 5k is done by the dealer before you get the car but it's being reduced to 3.5k (I think) at some point in the near future. I reckon if you make your order official before the deadline you'll be OK.

You did check your house wiring is OK first, didn't you?

So, they remove the VRT at thre dealer, does this mean they make less money? I rang NTA today, and they said I need to pay all import costs. My house is relatively new, so charger shouldn't be a problem.

Put the car into the VRT calculator to see what you might owe on it.As far as I know anything imported from the UK newer than a 2019 is subject to VAT at 10% plus any VRT due.All Brexit stuff.

Remember if you take the money off the NTA it must be plated up for three full years or they may ask for some of it back.If you're importing anything it most likely won't have any warranty by the time it lands here.So if you get a battery failure or something expensive you might have some problems.

The car would wanna be very cheap to make it worth importing.

Okay, so I've gotten grant amount of 7k towards a less than 3 year old EV(not PHEV). But this is for changing from diesel to electric. I'm importing from Northern Ireland, so no VAT needs to be paid, only VRT. I thought there was VRT relief for PSV drivers.

Don't think so Firewall. The VRT relief is the same that everyone gets. The only thing different for PSV owners is the NTA grant.

If the vehicle is valued under 60k there's no VRT at all for every person that buys an EV.Nothing PSV specific.

My comment was about new out of a dealership. Don't know about importing from abroad. Is there any value to it at the moment?

Boards.ie have a buy & sell section in their EV forum.  All the fashionable people are panic-selling their EV's so they can switch to Tesla.  You might get a bargain?  They're EV fan-bois so they probably look after their vehicles.

Why would you buy a Tesla with autopilot when you have to be there for the whole shift to take money? I hardly ever use my cruise control FFS!

I'd been keeping an eye on the Boards.ie EV section and I was enthusiastic about a Tesla and getting serious about getting one. Then I read about one lad had a model 3 with a failed drivetrain after 16000Km and I completely lost interest.

I know it doesn't happen to many people but even one in a few thousand cars isn't good enough.Apparently it was covered under warranty but taxi warranty isn't that long for us.Massive gamble driving one of those yokes for your living.

Yeah, Tesla owners are famously defensive of the brand so you have to be careful putting your head above the parapet.  There was always rumours/hints that the quality control in Tesla's wasn't the best.  It's a computer company (Move Fast and Break Things - newspaper opinion piece*) that makes cars.  I think Tesla made a shitload of Teslas too quickly and now they have the sell them pronto to prop up the share price (and help him pay for Twitter and SpaceX).

Silicon Valley’s foundational ethos is to “move fast and break things.” When Facebook first made that their motto, Mark Zuckerberg meant to capture his company’s, and Silicon Valley’s ethos of radical innovation — that if you weren’t moving fast enough to break things, you’d be left behind. But we’ve come to understand that for too many Silicon Valley firms, moving fast means breaking things at other people’s expense. And permission is not necessary.

Tesla will have to fix almost every car it’s ever sold in China because of a braking defect

How many is 'almost'?

Quote
Tesla Inc. will need to fix almost every car it’s ever sold in China due to an issue with the vehicles’ acceleration systems.  Some 1.1 million electric cars that Tesla made at its Shanghai factory or imported into China between January 2019 and April this year will need to be sent an over-the-air software fix to rectify the issue, according to a statement from the State Administration for Market Regulation on Friday.

Tesla announces it won’t produce Model S and Model X in right-hand-drive

Quote
Tesla announced that it won’t be producing Model S and Model X vehicles in right-hand-drive configuration any longer.  Many Tesla Model S and Model X buyers in right-hand-drive markets woke up to a bad surprise today.
Tesla told them that they either canceled their orders or have to switch it to a left-hand-drive version.

Some of them had been waiting for years since the design refresh in 2021 for their cars, but Tesla has decided to cancel the production of Model S and Model X vehicles in right-hand-drive. We recently reported on how Tesla inexplicably stopped taking orders for Model S and Model X in several right-hand-drive markets, like Australia, Singapore, and Thailand.

Now Tesla has informed buyers in those markets that their orders have been canceled. The company wrote in an email:  Due to recent changes to the vehicle program, Model X will not be available in Right Hand Drive. Unfortunately this means your order is unable to be fulfilled and will be cancelled. You will receive a full refund for any payments made. We understand that this may be disappointing news to receive and want to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

In some markets, like in the UK, Tesla is still selling Model S and Model X vehicles, but it is not accepting new orders and instead, the company is making left-hand-drive units available as new inventory vehicles.

The automaker wrote on its website:  Available in the United Kingdom as Left-Hand Drive. Take delivery by June 30th, 2023, to receive 3 years of free Supercharging.

Yep, only available in left-hand drive on their Irish website!
