You are entitled to the full cost of the estimate + whatever you add on fer loss of earnings while car in fer repair. As in you get paid the full estimate but you can have it done by a local panel beater fer a fraction of what a main dealer might charge and trouser the difference.

A non-taxi friend of mine just 'scratched' her car along a wall & needs a new bumper and side panel,  I believe.  She was half-thinking the same thing but the insurance company were pushing the official garage repair and said if she went down the 'indie garage' route, the paperwork & payment would take forever.  So she went the official garage route and is getting a courtesy car for a few days while the repairs take place.  Little or no paperwork.
That is a different scenario to the one I responded to.

I did know that, Ken. To be honest I can't be arsed, I'll just let Allianz deal directly with the approved repairer - who called me this morning to confirm that they had the go-ahead from Allianz, I didn't even ask what the estimate was! As it happens it's the same firm that put my MKII Octy back together after it was written off 6 or 7 years ago, jaysus me memory is properly fucked. Anywaysanall, on that occasion the (uninsured drivers fund appointed) insurance firm paid the value of the car less the highest scrap yard offer and I paid cash, finishing a grand or two ahead of the game with some second hand or spurious panels used in place of main stealer ones. That car came back as good as new... and it still is... with nearly 400,000 kilos on the clock!

If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.
