Approved: Taxi Regulation (Taxi Maximum Permissible Age) Regulations 2025

Following public consultation, the NTA Board has approved the Taxi Regulation (Taxi Maximum Permissible Age) Regulations 2025. This regulation permits an extension to the final operation date of taxis currently in the fleet, first registered in 2015, and due to reach their final operation date between 1 st January 2025 and 31 st December 2025.

The new Regulations come into effect on April 1 st, 2025 .

For those with licenced vehicles that meet this description, but which went inactive since January 1 st 2025, from April 1 st you can contact NTA to renew your licence with this vehicle until its new final operation date in 2026. NTA will not apply a late renewal fee for such licence holders where the late renewal is completed by 30 th April 2025.

Affected SPSV licence holders will receive communications in the coming days confirming the new final operation date of their current licensed vehicle.

The consultation report and final version of the Regulation can be found below:

Taxi Regulation (Taxi Maximum Permissible Age) Regulations 2025

Yours sincerely,

National Transport Authority
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Very shoddy work from the NTA to bring that out 3 months in to the year in question when the vast majority of drivers have already changed vehicle.

@ Stephen; Is it possible to see on any database how many 152 taxis are in the fleet ?
As they will seemingly be the only ones to make any gain from this taking it that the vast 99% of 151 taxies have already traded up.

Any car that was registered as a Taxi during covid should be given the same extension as everyone else. There's years left in my car but presently it has to go Jan 27 when it's 10 years old.

Mine is the same but's it's not a worry to me, I'd be more concerned with Toyota bringing out a nua Avensis before 2027 as I would prefer it to a Corolla.

100%, there is only 105,000 miles on my engine. I have to change the car in may 2026.

I'd be kicking off if I was you 90. I'd be getting onto them now and enquiring if my car will be due an extension and if so can I know BEFORE it goes out of date and I get rid of it. This time next year I'll be contacting them and wanting to know how some cars got extensions and others didn't.  Why did some drivers have to change cars whist others did not. I'd easily get another 5 years out of that car. 1 more year would give me more breathing space and I'd easily upscale with me next one. I want a camry and I'm God damn gonna get one.

+1. I did write to Minister Canney to point out how we were punished for complying with Government advice. I was somewhat encouraged to be advised that my comments were noted!

At the very least we should be given extensions equivalent to the length of time we were in receipt of PUP/PTSE.

I will certainly be chasing it up  next year. I will want to know why I'm being penalised when others weren't.

Indeed. I'm not sure I'm finished whinging about it either. I'll certainly be contacting my local TDs and I might pay a visit to a certain public house in the independent State of Kerry and possibly contact Boxer Moran as per Ken's earlier suggestion.

When is your car out rats? What year is it? Was it lying up for 2 years like mine was? I want to know about possible extensions before the car expires thus forcing me to sell it not 3 months after the fact.

Yes - and I have the social welfare payment records to prove it!
