There's a lot to go wrong on a modern vehicle now. I think we'll miss the older simpler vehicles.Too many sensors and unessesary electronics. If you take off a bumper now or replace a windscreen a lot of sensors need to get recalibration.

Just kinda related but for the first time since I started driving people are mentioning that taxis are too expensive. When I explain that members of the public were calling for newer taxis about 15 years ago they all play dumb and say they didn't ask for them.

I remember all the talk about the ten year rule on the other forum and half of those lads are dead or retired and the youngsters are left with the bill for newer vehicles with tapering grants.

Doomed we are..

[Tongue-in-cheek] If you hired an electrician* or plumber to do work, they'd charge you €100 just to turn up.  There's a price to be paid if you want someone to do the driving* for you & we only charge a modest €4 to turn up at your door.  Plenty of cheaper options before you get to a taxi...

To be fair most of us just turned up at the "exam", Watty. When I done mine the supervising Garda told us to just raise our hands if we had any questions. As I had some previous in sitting exams conducted by a professional body I assumed he meant questions relevant to procedural matters... not so he provided individual assistance to any man who raised his hand ranging from adding up the extras that would be displayed on a meter in the (then) Dublin taximeter area to naming roads on common routes. Frankly, it was a farce... and we had no Google Maps or Garmins back then. We had to learn from our clients and follow printed maps, sometimes with nothing more than a lamppost number on some obscure country lane to find!

Give it back to the Gardai, I say.

Maybe... but just like clapped out converted cargo vehicles there's no age limit on drivers. However, unlike such vehicles drivers are not subject to any fitness tests whatsoever.

That piece of paper was Govt-issued and that's what counts.  The Govt &/or the Guards deemed that exam sufficient.  I like the example of a nuclear engineering graduate.  You wouldn't put him in an empty room and tell him to design a nuclear power plant.  You'd let him have access to books and technical guides etc.  He has his 'piece of paper' as do you and the plumber.  Doesn't really matter how you got there.  Youse have your pieces of paper.

Like I wrote earlier, tongue-in-cheek.

What about all the immigrants that are given the piece of paper when they can't even speak ENGLISH... and then given brand new cars for nothing with the community welfare officer paying for their fuel?

How are you expected to compete when you had to pay €12,000 for a car that's only worth €10,000 5 years later and you have to pay up to €1,000 for electricity out of every €30,000 you take in?

There was no verbal test when I graduated  :-X so not sure what the ability to speak English has to do with it.  I'd imagine that lots of Oirish don't want to talk to immigrants so a quiet journey probably works out best for everybody.

In any event, I don't worry about things I have no control over.  Each morning I put on my best tracksuit (and a dab or two of aftershave, of course) and go out and do my best.  Inshallah as my new comrades keep advising me!

Still, your car has cost you at least €400/year for the last 5 years while the migrant worker has paid nothing for his. Just like the left cheek of an African immigrant's bottom that's neither fair nor right!

@RC - I get the feeling you're stressed about things.  You should work the phrase Inshallah into your mindfulness routine.  Maybe as a little meditation chant out in your shed?  You'll feel much better.

Nha... I don't do stress, Watty. As Mrs. Catcher says if I was any more laid back I'd be dead.
