Boober fixed fares
« on: August 18, 2026, 12:31:41 pm »
I very rarely take an uber fixed fare, only if i need to get to a certain area and one pops up that will being me there. Sat on my arse here today and ive noticed a couple of fixed airport trips pop up at 14-15 euro....they were typically 19euro.....looks like they're starting to turn the screw tighter. Anyone else noticing it? Ive opted out of freenows 25% rip off jobs, rarely do uber fixed jobs, earnings are taking a serious hit but i just wont do these jobs as a matter of principle.

It's beyond me why drivers let them manipulate the market with their fare mind games, although I do accept the financial needs of some are such that they have to. I don't like, but will accept, the Craps right to charge whatever commission they like for their service, but the jiggery pokery with fares is sickening. The NTA put a lot of effort to come up with a fair fare, and all the meter hoops we have to jump through. Said a million times before that we could have it all our way.....unity for €3.95 per day with TaT would fix it for us. Having said that the AGM will be interesting to say the least.

There's ~10,000 drivers in Dublin and, statistically, there'll always be someone desperate for the next fiver who'll do these discounts.  The apps know this and abuse it  ::fight ::fight ::fight

The airport jobs from the city are priced almost always through the tunnel and the price you see is after commissions and tolls.

Only worth it if you can get a job out there.Otherwise you could be getting as low as €22 to the airport and an empty run back.

Also I've noticed the prices increasing on offers that I've previously declined... Might only be a euro extra but they know exactly what they're doing. They routinely offer different prices on the same job to different drivers in the UK depending on how desperate the algo thinks you are.

Best to leave it off if you can avoid it as it's only going to get worse.I've deleted Freenow for good and it won't be getting reinstalled. Uber could be next.

I might have to go back to the ranks and do it the hard way.

Not noticed any reduction myself but I wouldn't be up above in Dublin much. In fact over 80% of the ones I've covered have been settled on the meter. However, with the schools out for the summer there's no traffic at all in these parts in the mornings. The problem I see with that is how it might affect fixed fares from September. Uber is obviously very adept at getting the fare extremely close to the meter (in my experience anyway) so it's obviously using averages from data collated over time. Assuming the men are inputting the correct metered fares during the school holidays that data is liable to feed into those averages going forward.

As I mentioned on another thread I did have an experience that I've never seen before on the app last Friday morning. When I dropped a ride at DAP I drove away as normal but when I got some way down the old road towards Santry the app told me to go back to the front of the queue at DAP... presumably Zone 18 car park. As I had a prior engagement I declined, pressing the dismiss button. It then said I had some sort of fast pass that I could use until 18:00 or some such to skip the line at DAP. I never used it but it did get me to thinking they could easily reduce fares to DAP if combined with that "reward". There's Lads queuing for hours for Free Now jobs @20% commission plus €3 DAP fee...  and others queuing in the Kesh (fair enough they'll more often than not rob their victims to compensate) for at least an hour when it's quiet. Surely there's plenty who'd speculate a few notes off a fare to get away as soon as they drop?

The main issues I've noticed with the fixed fares are:

The 8pm / 8am bug i.e. if a client orders before 8pm it's priced on rate 1 regardless of the fare being wholly or partially completed on rate 2 so there's a big hit for the driver there. Obviously it works the other way round in the morning but, alas, there's no gain for the driver as the metered fare then applies... assuming the driver enters the correct metered fare.

Bank holiday rates are never applied unless the BH happens to be a Sunday.

I guess it's also noteworthy how popular the set fares have become with drivers, at least in North County Dublin. Initially the men were obviously apprehensive with lower fares lingering on the screen for several seconds. Anything over €40 after commission always disappeared at the speed of light but now they all disappear in less than an instant. I think some of the men might not have realized that the fare shown is after commission... to be fair some probably don't even know how much commission they pay! These days, as a rule of thumb if it's on the screen long enough to read the desto it's not worth doing!

The city may well be different but obviously the meter is a relatively new concept where I am and fixed fares have always been the norm... al least for locals/regulars. Fixed fares definitely appeal to many clients in these parts and the fact is they use more taxis when they know with certainty what the price is in advance.

My situation at home means i have to work 9-6. If TaT could guarantee me 600 a week on those hours I'd happily pay the membership and fees and uninstall the other apps, top up the 600 with some rank work and I'd be grand.

All that's guaranteed in this game is that if you don't work you don't earn. At €30/week surely it's worthy of support?

The problem with Uber is nothing to do with fixed fares, it's good old fashioned below cost selling. Uber always discounts fares by 10-30% which is currently financed out of it's own deep pockets. As with Free Now that won't last forever, it'll be passed on to drivers either directly or through increased commission with additional (notably VAT) costs. In other markets Uber seems to favour variable rates of commission so you'd pay significantly more at quiet times.

True Rat, guarantee was not the best choice of words, but ye know what i mean. Getting me tax moneys together at the moment, then I'll join up to TaT. I've been tellin all me passengers to download the TaT app and I'm not even on it yet. Someone above mentioned seeing a fixed price rise a bit after refusing it, i once saw a fixed job in kinseally, i refused it, almost immediately, literally within 2 or 3 seconds it flashed on my screen again as a regular job.

Reappearing as a normal job is just the client trying another option, I guess.

Rates fluctuating doesn't surprise me but I can only really comment on my own experience. I find the fixed fares are only ever lower than the meter if I've 3 or 4 passengers or sometimes with 2pax but only by pennies. I have noticed some fixed fare clients switch back to normal fares... not sure if that's simply because they realize the meter is what always applies (most regulars of a morning are 1pax going to the station) and conclude (not necessarily correctly these days) that the normal rate might appeal to more drivers... or, maybe, they find drivers to be more pleasant when the meter is running!

I have heard mention of certain non local drivers not putting the correct metered fare in if it's lower than the fixed fare. I wouldn't do that myself but I can understand why they do it... the client has agreed a price so is highly unlikely to pay any attention to the meter... in fact, most are gone before you total it when they're paying by app.
