I thought I was missing something alright. I bought the Ionity one without doing much research to be honest. A couple of the local taximen out here suggested it's a good deal and it's convenient enough for me. I'll have to have a look at eCars when my subscription runs out. There's a fast charger in the soccer club car park that isn't on any of the maps and nobody seems to know about. I don't know what brand it is so I'll have to check that out. Other than that Applegreen is the only other one that's within a 5 minute drive.

... bur ifn you're cold and wet from plugging the charger lead in running the heater could neutralise potentially adverse consequences?

So are you suggesting that a Tax deduction for EV drivers for wet weather gear should be applied or do lads pumping juice also get wet .I will concede that most if not every EV Charger seems to lack weather shielding for those wishing to avail of its service .If we were to contact the Relevant authority on this issue would it be Oilskins boots and umberells tax deductable or what remedial solution would you suggest for weather related hardship .No sun cover in Summer Glasses and factor 15 ,Could or should also be offset against earnings .

Us environ(mentalists) can use our glow of smugness to repel all minor discomforts. I think I'll buy a biodegradable jumper with matching sandals and wear it every day until it decomposes naturally.

A lady asked me what the green bar on my numberplate is for... Extra smugness, ma'am, and don't you forget it, says I.

Try the plugshare app for the soccer car park...

If you're mostly charging at home and only occasionally using outside chargers, it might work out cheaper to have no subs at all and just pay the higher cost the odd time you use them?  I use Ecars as an example but their sub is ~€5/month or €60/yr.  If the difference between the sub and no-sub price was, say, 10cent/kW, would you charge enough to justify that €60 sub?  That'll keep your spreadsheet busy over the weekend  :P

I know but I'm tied in for the year now. I'll have to reevaluate it when my sub expires. I reckon I need to get over 400kw for the year for the Ionity one to make financial sense, I'll look at the others closer to the time. I'm up to 279kwh for the 7 odd months that I've had the Ionity sub but that includes the few charges before I got the home charger installed. They do have a middle option too with a lower annual sub and higher rates compared to the higher sub but lower than the on demand rate so plenty to analyse when I have the full year's data.

BTW, today's takings figure was 156 from 28% of the battery. That's much closer to my (all mild/warm weather) average than yesterday was. I did use the heater a little this morning but not as much as yesterday. I'll cut that nonsense out when I get my new biodegradable jumper!

I can't remember if you said you had heated seats RC but it's widely considered the best option for staying warm when you're concerned about the battery. Apparently it uses less juice to heat one seat than the whole car by the heater.

Unfortunately not. They were only on the higher spec model which I mighta bought if I didn't think the one I bought was a grand and a half more than it was until after it was registered... but then, time was the enemy as well so I probably wouldn't have trusted getting the tinted windows swapped out anyway given that there was a 17 and a half large grant on the line. TBH, heating my arse never really appealed to me but I understand now that it's a fuel economy thing in EVs!

Would a tin of Heinz baked beans work as a substitute?

Get some thermal underwear and eat the beans then create your own central heating..

There's a chance that the seats have the heating element in already and just needs to be software unlocked.Costs them more to take the electronics out sometimes.

Google says no just checked.

I did two hours starting at midnight Saturday and used 25% of the battery. With the heating and lights anall running fuel economy was down (25%) to 3 kilos per 1% of charge. Of course being on rate 3 kept the % of takings figure low. Using my domestic supply (as I did) to recharge the cost for 25% based on last month's weighted average cost per % would equate to c.€3.62. With a takings figure of €137 that works out at c.2.6%. If one were to take the Ionity (full subscription) rate of 46c/KWh (30c/% of charge) the figure would be close enough to double that at €7.50 or 5.5%.

Obviously, even the Ionity figure (which is ignoring the €120/year sub) compares favourably to diesel but extrapolating those numbers would suggest that even if you kicked off with your battery charged to 100% you'd likely have to recharge to do anything over 8 hours of a cold Saturday night. However, those were obviously the busiest two hours of any potential longer shift and I was working outside of the city so I guess just pottering around the city with some hours being quieter more often than not you probably would get out kicking off with a fully charged battery?

Of course, the irony of it all is that they're only cheaper to run because there's no duty on the fuel - the fuel that is generated through burning fossil fuels. In reality when you take into account power factor and conversion losses at various points of the convoluted process and the weight of the battery these EVs require at least twice the amount of fossil fuels to be burnt as would be the case for a vehicle that directly burns it's fossil fuel supply and they would cost at least twice as much to run as a vehicle directly powered by fossil fuel if the electricity was subject to the same rate of Government duty as applies to vehicles that directly burn fossil fuel.
