Taxi drivers are a huge risk for insurance companies. As a group we have no respect for the rules of the road. Only last night I was driving down O'connell St at the maximum permissible speed of 30 kilos/hour and was passed by 17 taxis, 17 reckless morons racing down that small stretch of road with impunity. Insurance premiums will continue to increase until some politician makes the Gardai get up off their fat lazy arses and enforce the law.

Apps have a part to play, too. Taxis meandering down roads, completely out of control, while their drivers focus on tiny screens is commonplace in suburbia these days.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Do ya still need a clean licence to apply for yer PSV?...We had no penalty points up until a few years ago which I'm sure plays a part in increased policies and possibly excluding new entrants.

Bottom line is the insurance industry used to have 20000 PSV holders paying small premiums now they need to charge more to fewer(12000?) drivers to cover the taxi/limo book.

Took me ten seconds to find a taxi lastnight. We need to teach our new batch of snowflakes how to find a taxi late at night. The days of standing off the main road and expecting multiple taxis to be on standby begging for business won't be back anytime soon.Just because the apps don't work it doesn't mean there are no cabs available.Maybe the NTA could do a video tutorial for passengers about how to put yer arm in the air?How to walk away from the 200 people on the rank on New year's and get a cab on the quays?

When they say clean licence they generally mean no endorsements. PSV licences shouldn't be issued or renewed to any driver with penalty points and PSV/HGV drivers should get double penalty points.... and the rules of the road should be enforced to ensure penalty points are issued where earned. Even at that there's still going to be staged crashes involving taxis that impact on insurance premiums.

Almost a whole generation has been deprived of the craic to be had queuing for a taxi late at night. Punters used to love queuing, the youngsters still love queuing to get into disco bars... many a young man got his end away on foot of chatting up young ladies in queues. I daresay babies, some long term relationships and even marriages resulted.
