price this Ken
« on: November 24, 2017, 05:57:38 am »
Tuesday morning the good people at Patrick Powers betting emporium beside the penny Hill Pub in Lucan were offering a wager on what country Comrade Robert Mugabe would leg it to for refuge if he decided to voluntarily abdicate his throne .They listed off most African Countries with South Africa a short priced favourite followed by Mosambique and Botswana among the list was a wager for any other country you didnt have to name the country just pick the option any other country meant not included on the list .I know of one shrewd taxi driving  punter who asked himself if you had tens of millions of dollars in your Swiss or other bank account why the fuck would you want to live in the third world .I would think Singapore or Dubai combined are long odds on .Bobs mates are getting rounded up as I type if Bobby M and his Bint Gracie have any cop on they will be on the first plane to Dubai today before the new President has time to sign his death warrant by the time I got down the road to the next Patrick Power betting emporium the wager was no longer available .

You really are the Alan Turing of taxi drivers. NASA must be breaking your down for the key algorithm to the universe. At least you're entertaining.

Seemingly de old kount wants to stay put, which at 90+ is fair enough,
he does seem to have some patrotism within him, even it has been
misplaced fer most of his leadership.

It looks like he is staying put John M.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/25/robert-mugabe-payoff-family-immunity-zimbabwe-zanu-pf

He got a $5 M 'Golden handshake' with protection within his home/mansion and a salary fer life
and Grace after he dies gets half of that salary fer the rest of her life.
At aged 93, why would he be going anywhere else ?

I see your point now John M, but I would need to see much more details of the market to make any type of informed judgement.

How did your bet end up John M ?

From Wikipedia;
"After presidency.
Mugabe was given full diplomatic status in late December 2017 and was entitled to a house, up to 23 staff members, and personal vehicles, according to a government gazette."

It was a stupid market to set up without putting an end date on it.

Any novelty market that I ever set up I always put an end date on it.
Fer instance the one that I got most notoriety fer was the market called;
"Who stole Derek's Gnome ?" It was based on the Coronation street
program about Twenty years or so ago and the Racing Post ran with
the story in their First ever Racing Post on Sunday edition.
The market started in the spring or summer and I put an end date of
New years day on it.

The strange thing about that "Who stole Derek's Gnome" market from 1995 was one bet I laid on it which still mystifies me to this day, a lad that I knew from the in-town drinking crowd and wasn't much of a gambler came in around August or Sept looking fer 264 Ir punts on Norris @ 9/4. 264 was a strange amount and would kinda suggest a syndicate, maybe ?

As I knew him I gave him his bet and cut Norris to 7/4. A few months later a staff member rang me to say his sister had been reading up in one of the Red Tops about future episodes of soap operas and they were hinting at Norris being the culprit, so I closed off the market at the start of December, with still a month left to run before all bets were voided.

The early Christmas week episode of Coronation street saw Norris being accused and denying the theft and then eventually on the 28th of December episode he admitted to the theft handing Derek back his Gnome, just a few days before the bet would have been voided.

The 600 notes loss is of no concern to me, but it still bugs me as to where he got his imformation from and how it came so close to the end.

Clearly inside info. There's some significance in the £264, either it equates to a round figure in sterling or he was taunting you with some cryptic reference that was subsequently revealed on the show.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

I have no doubt it was inside imfo, but where did he get it ?
And with the dead-line being so close ?

The story writers of Coronation street hardly moved things around to accomodate his bet.
Most things come out in the Wash eventually (Like Lar and the Ads) but Twenty Two years
down the line and this one hasn't been explained yet.
