Jim Waldron Calls For Lower Entry Costs
« on: April 09, 2018, 12:29:45 pm »
Quote from article entitled “400 Less Cabbies In The Last Year” in the latest issue of Tacsaî magazine:

“Many people from trades in the construction sector became taxi drivers when building work dried up and they are now going back to their old jobs as they are providing more regular work and pensions” Mr. Waldron said.

He claimed that the cost for new entrants to the industry was prohibitive as first-time applicants had to buy wheelchair accessible taxis which are considerably more expensive than standard vehicles.
If it doesn't have a roof sign and door stickers it's not a taxi.

Most reps are loud mouths who'd be best advised to say nothing, ever. Representing drivers is a lucrative business but, for some reason, it doesn't attract competent personnel these days.

I dunno if that taxi mag is of any use to drivers anymore. They seem to push the agenda of the cab companies and reps a little too hard.

It's the dispatch firms paying for advertising, I guess. However, it generally seeks comment from drivers' appointed representatives. You can't blame the journalist for the reps being clueless. To be fair, it has criticised Hail0/mytaxi in previous editorials despite the firm being (one of) it's biggest sponsor(s).

Maybe they're just reflecting what drivers are saying but I think they're too soft.Is there an actual journalist involved or just another double jobbing taxi driver?

Not sure. Some of the editorials demonstrate very little knowledge of the trade, maybe a journo doing a nixer? Given that it's only published every second month there's probably only a few hours work a week in it.

Haven't heard TTnH complain about NTAs recruitment drive. In fact, I think they have a seat on TAC so have advised NTA to go ahead with the same while they make noise about 1/16th of a ban on taxis using a tiny stretch of road up above in Dublin to deflect their members' attention.

Most of us are around long enough to know how things work in Ireland. Tim got a seat on TAC, mytaxi had spent millions on promotions and bonuses, TAC members needed lobbying.... 2 + 2 = ?

All them union men must be close to retirement age.Maybe it's just more efficient to divert app marketing money straight to the union bosses.

Something I have noticed is nobody criticising anyone in the NTA.The unions seem to be giving Anne Graham an easy ride compared to Kathleen Doyle and her predecessor. When Kathleen Doyle introduced   barriers to entry they wouldn't stop moaning.Very suspicious altogether.

I'm no fan of dispatch companies but they'll be needed as competition when MyTaxi starts raising its commission to 15% and beyond.

Maybe Waldron is being told what to say by Multiple Plate Owner, and fellow "Union" Official,  Christy Humphrey? His son rents out a number of yokes too, mostly to Fordeners.

Probably not filling the rentals...and rightly so.
