The Government is to look at the possibility of banning up to 70,000 used car imports as part of a major overhaul of motor taxation policy.

It has responded to demands for a ban on UK imports registered on or before 2014 by expressing concerns for public health over the volume of 'dirty' old diesels, in particular, being brought in.

The cut-off year of 2014 being asked for roughly coincides with what are called Euro6 emissions standards.

A spokesman told the Irish Independent last night the focus on UK imports is part of potentially sweeping measures to ensure Exchequer returns from motoring are protected as increasing numbers of lower-tax electric cars are bought.

Last year, more than 100,000 used cars were imported from the UK - the majority of them diesel. And of these, it is thought by experts that 70,000 did not meet Euro6 standards.

The implications for the environment and for public health are profound as even relatively new (2015) cars spew 25pc more emissions than current models.

An average four-year-old car emits 4.3 tonnes of CO2 a year. But a new car, the current Nissan Qashqai 1.5 diesel for example, emits 25pc fewer CO2s than its 2015 counterpart.

The Exchequer loses out on higher tax revenues from new cars when people opt to buy a lower-tax generating import. The tax take on a new car is €8,500 compared with €2,500 for a used import.

So it's all about the tax take....not the environment!!

Was talking to my neighbour(NCT guy),he was saying that government..well RSA are pushing for the 1.6mm thread depth to be done away with and brought in line with most other european countries which is 3mm....those countries won't be too happy as they export their part worn tyres to the Emerald Isle.

Logged into a Brexit seminar on line a few months ago .One of the debates was about  the importation of pre registered goods from the Uk to the EU .It covered vehicles especially comercial or plant like bulldozers ,tractors ,and similar .The Point was If you import these vehicles into Europe from the UK as the UK is not a member of the EU then the EUwill impose VAT on the valuation as in their view VAT has not been paid in a EU state .I Questioned this as no VAT is charged on Jap imports .It was pointed out that Ireland is the main point of entry for pre owned Jap cars with just under 90% of Jap imports to Europe landing in Ireland and it is an Irish Government decision what tax or duty they impose on these imports but that could change under European regulations aimed at preventing companies purchasing plant or vehicles in the UK to avoid tax or duty in other parts of the EU as this would give the UK an unfair traiding advantage .A lot of hidden landmines in the Brexit  deal that will impact us all.

Buying part worn tyres is like buying condoms with only slight tears in them. 8)

Ah condoms with a slight nick in them are grand!!

The missusss car went through the NCT last Friday, passed no probs other than an advisory for the two front tyres...less than 3mm...they haven't reached the 1.6mm thread depth marker yet...the tester said they'd need to be changed soon....imo..he shouldn't be sayin fukall and there shouldn't be an advisory either....if that's the case tyre suppliers should be advising their customers that their tyre will need to be changed...eventually!!

There is VAT on Jap imports, erm. It's lower in the UK (@17.5%) hence many come that way. Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut and let them think....

What's the thread depth of a new tyre, Hal?
