I was reading an interview done with tommy grangegorman a while back.
he was saying there'd been a week long deadlock in the deregulation negotiations.
a few of the union heads went in to find out what the story was and then he got a call that night to say the industry was being totally deregulated.
priceless stuff.
I wonder did he share the knowledge with his lickspittle? 8)

Insider info.

i have been saying it for years, it is insurance cost that is stopping a lot of people entering the taxi game, if it was 2 or 3,000 euro it would be ok but 7-12,000 euro is a non runner for most people who would like to set up  a taxi service. but the insurance companies are running riot here the last few years, there is supposed to be a rule that prohibits insurers asking for so much money for insurance but nothing is been done about it, i was quoted 12,000 euro(third party fire and theft) for my first year and the irish insurance federation allowed RSA to give me such a quote.

shane ross was asked to help me, he rang me and said his office would try to help, he or his office didnt do a thing. i managed to get a quote of 6,500 in the end from AXA but through no help of the insurance federation or ross.

1990 I think the insurance companies are probably bound by law to provide us all with a quote, the fact that it is a fckn crazy figure does not matter , in other words they have not refused you , they only want to screw the fcuk out of you and that appears to be allowed.

Declined Cases Agreement
What can I do if I am unable to obtain motor insurance?

Insurance Ireland operates a Declined Cases Agreement, which is adhered to by all motor insurers in Ireland.

Under the agreement, the insurance market will not refuse to provide insurance to an individual seeking insurance, if he/she has approached at least three insurers and has not been able to obtain cover from them.  In general, the insurer first approached will be required to provide the individual with a quote.  It is therefore important that the proposer keeps a careful note of the order in which he/she approached each of the three companies.

Where an individual has held a policy within the previous three years, the insurance company concerned is obliged to provide the individual with a quotation.  Again this is subject to the proviso that refusals have been received from three insurers (of which the previous insurer may be one).

The only grounds on which an insurer can refuse cover are where to provide insurance would be contrary to public interest.

The agreement is administered by a Committee made up of representatives of each of the companies who have signed the agreement. The Committee also includes a representative of the Consumers’ Association of Ireland and the Financial Services Ombudsman’s Bureau as external observers.  If it is impossible to identify which insurer was the first approached for a quote, then a rota of insurers comes into effect and the Committee allocates the risk to the next insurer on the rota.

The Committee can also decide whether a quote is so high or the terms so excessive as to make the quote tantamount to a refusal, in which case it will review the matter.

12,000 euro is a quote that is so high as to make the quote tantamount to a refusal in my opinion.

Look on the bright side 1990 if your insurance was 2k like mine you'd be sitting around for an hour between jobs because there are too many taxis. For as long as mine is relatively cheap I won't be whinging too much.

mine is a lot less now and high insurance keeps others from competing with us, that is good for a little while then you have uber ride share being promoted because of lack of taxis. i would prefer a few new taxis entering the market than any tom dick or harry with a phone and a car to be operating as a taxi.
